On one side, it faces the recently renovated Xiaoyi old street, enhancing its functionality and vibrancy. On the northern side, the site is adjacent to the Fengxi river, a significant local natural feature. This unique riverside location and the presence of abandoned public houses influenced the building's distinct scales and specific geometric design. In response to these prevailing urban trends, Wang Weijen Architecture (WWA) presented an exhibition titled "Courtyardism." This exhibition proposes a critical counterpoint to overscaled urbanism by re-centering architectural principles around the balance between interior and exterior space, the accommodation of high-density development with environmental awareness, and the preservation of human scale, walkability, and spatial clarity. This architectural marvel, designed by Duilio Damilano of Damilano Studio, sought to create a secluded oasis, blending Italian luxury with the serene aesthetics of a Japanese Zen garden. The client and architect shared a mutual admiration for Japanese design principles, which significantly influenced the project's interior and exterior elements. The exterior of the pavilion features a large garden, conceptualized by landscape gardener Paolo Roagna. This garden draws inspiration from symmetrical Japanese botany, incorporating sculptural Bonsai trees and water features harmoniously alongside indigenous trees and shrubs. The building's perimeter is defined by sculptural metal grid structures on opposing sides. These grids are not merely aesthetic; they provide essential shade during the summer months and are adorned with geometrically positioned square blocks of Fir wood, adding visual depth. The external walls are also crafted from Fir wood, treated with the traditional Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique, which involves burning the wood to enhance its durability. The single-floor dwelling utilizes pigmented micro cement throughout. Externally, this material is acid-etched to mimic the appearance of natural stone, while the interior surfaces are left smooth. The internal layout is designed to foster continuous interaction with the surrounding natural environment, largely achieved through expansive sliding glass walls. The interiors showcase a thoughtful curation of design pieces, where luxury meets functionality and artistic expression. Wutopia Lab, led by cofounder and chief architect Ting Yu, undertook the revitalization of Bogong Island Ecology Park near Shanghai by re-envisioning the traditional Chinese pergola. The project aimed to attract more visitors to the park by replacing a dilapidated ¾-mile-long canopy with a new, architecturally dynamic, and visually appealing centerpiece. The new structure, named Emerald Screen Pergola, spans 10,000 square feet, stands 32 feet high, and was completed within 10 months of design and construction, already attracting over 10,000 visitors. The design process involved detailed planning, with Wutopia Lab utilizing Photoshop to illustrate the site plan and elevations for the multi-arched pavilion. The construction phase lasted four months, during which workers built the Emerald Screen Pergola from bent tubular steel panels, which were then inset with steel mesh and painted white. This modern interpretation transformed the typology of traditional bamboo pergolas into a stacked and overlapping mesh panel design. Ting Yu drew inspiration for the structure from historical Chinese art, specifically an Imperial-era handscroll depicting walled gardens, a wisteria-covered pergola, and structured paths within a lush landscape. The contemporary design mimics natural forms; the curved panels vary in height and width, resembling leaves. These panels are intended to be covered eventually with various climbing plants such as jasmine, ivy, roses, wisteria, and honeysuckle, further integrating the structure with the natural environment. From an aerial perspective, the pergola's flower-like configuration becomes apparent. The design also incorporates features that make it a desirable location for special occasions, such as wedding photo shoots. The structure follows a long, winding path, which Yu describes as "dragonlike." TEAM_BLDG undertook a comprehensive renovation of an apartment complex in a dense urban village in downtown Guangzhou, China. The original building, a matchbox-type house complex constructed between the 1950s and 1960s, required significant alterations and additions to meet the contemporary needs of its occupants. The project aimed to improve the quality of the community and living environment, particularly for young office workers who constitute a significant portion of the area's population. The renovation began with transforming the building's façade, which previously presented an old and dirty appearance. The design team sought to eliminate this negative impression and establish a new benchmark for long-term rental apartment brands. The new façade is intended to enhance the integration of the urban village with the broader city while preserving the local community's cohesion. After extensive research, the architects selected wavy punched aluminum plates to wrap the façade, extending from the atrium's two ends to the exterior. This pattern was chosen to subtly reference the original façade's mosaic splicing while also acting as a semi-transparent layer that visually lightens the building's mass. This reconstructed exterior highlights a deliberate contrast between new and old design languages, fostering a symbiosis among the diverse buildings within the urban landscape, characterized by varying sizes and textures. Simultaneously, the interior spaces underwent a redesign focused on promoting neighborhood interaction and communal activities. The corridor was reconfigured with staggered floors, and walls were strategically 'cut' to create both public and private resting areas. The original structures within the yard were cleaned, and essential utilities like cords, lines, and pipes were meticulously organized to ensure the space's openness and comfort. These commercial areas had been underutilized, with their traditional business models becoming obsolete. The revitalization strategy focused on understanding the local demographics, which consist predominantly of elderly and relocated residents, whose primary needs include daily shopping and leisure activities. To cater to these demands, the project integrated a fresh market and small public spaces, known as pocket parks, aiming to re-energize the neighborhood through lifestyle-driven interventions. The project encompasses an area of 1700 m² and was completed in 2024 by Dispacement Architectural Design.
