A colorful indoor garden in Lansdale — made from ceramic tiles

Deb and Rick Webb's home in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, showcases an extensive collection of ceramic tiles, primarily crafted by Rick, a retired clinical psychologist. The tiles, which often feature floral themes, surprised members of the Norristown Garden Club who visited the property expecting to see outdoor gardens but were captivated by the indoor artistic displays. Rick's work includes rows of pink, blue, and yellow flowered tiles in the sunroom, multicolored bloom panels flanking the grandfather clock in the foyer, and sunflower tiles adorning the living room and primary bathroom walls. A three-dimensional floral tile is also featured in the grandchildren's loft play area. Beyond floral motifs, Rick's artistic range extends to other subjects. A tile panel in his grandchildren’s bedroom depicts "the cow jumped over the moon" from the nursery rhyme. Another bedroom features zodiac tiles representing his and Deb's grandmothers, incorporated into a grandmother clock. Rick's work is also influenced by renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. His office cabinet is covered with tile art reminiscent of Picasso’s *Girl Before a Mirror*, while a headboard in the primary bedroom and wainscoting in the hall also display tile decor. A somber piece, a more than 3-by-6-foot tile interpretation of Picasso’s *Guernica*, hangs on the staircase. Unlike Picasso's monochromatic original, Rick's rendition colors the wounded horse, winged bird, mother holding a dead child, and crying woman, serving as a "reminder of the sorrow in the world." The outdoor areas of the Webb home also incorporate Rick's tile art. A terrace features stone arches embedded with tile letters quoting Walt Whitman and Hebrew writings: "The powerful play goes on and thou mayest contribute a verse." During the pandemic, Rick and his three sons constructed an 11-by-9-foot stone tower in the backyard. The tower's door is bordered by blue Matisse-style dancers and Alhambra-inspired zodiac tiles, stars, and other shapes. This structure serves both as a storage shed and a playhouse for their five grandchildren. Rick and Deb, who met in high school in Pittsburgh and married in 1972, moved to Philadelphia for graduate school at Temple University. Rick retired in 2014 from Haverford College, and Deb retired in 2011 from North Penn School District. In 2002, they commissioned architect Connie Lezenby to design their Lansdale home. What was initially conceived as a "small cottage" evolved into a 6,000-square-foot white house with a red door, featuring bedrooms for guests and a basement playroom that houses Rick’s workshop and kiln. The couple has a long-standing appreciation for decorative tiles, annually purchasing Moravian tiles, which are known for their bucolic scenes and subtle colors, contrasting with Rick’s more vibrant creations. While Moravian tiles adorn the fireplace surround, Rick’s exuberant designs cover the hearth. Deb expresses admiration for her husband’s art, though she notes they are "running out of space" for new additions. She has meticulously decorated the home to complement the tiles, using teal and pumpkin paint with white trim, and multihued Oriental rugs on oak floors.
