Serene Oasis In Essex: A Tranquil, Toned-Down Garden

Sally Mayer's Essex home, which she shares with her husband George, features a garden transformed into a serene oasis overlooking the Connecticut River. After 28 years in the home and raising a family, Mayer recently completed a renovation that extended to her outdoor spaces. Initially, her garden embraced a vibrant color palette, but she has since opted for a more tranquil approach, exclusively using white flowers accented by green or variegated foliage. This deliberate choice creates a sense of peace and ensures the garden complements the ever-changing hues of the river and sky, whether bright blue, slate, or gray. Mayer dedicates approximately three hours daily to maintaining her garden, focusing on watering and deadheading the numerous plants. Her selection includes annuals such as petunias, geraniums, alyssum, and New Guinea impatiens, which are paired with variegated vinca, English ivy, and spikes. To add dimension and height, she incorporates containers of topiaries. A stand of white hydrangeas and tall grasses frames the back lawn, further contributing to the garden's understated elegance. The creation of this serene landscape involves meticulous planning. Mayer prepares a detailed list before visiting multiple garden centers in the weeks leading up to Mother's Day. This timing allows her to access a wider selection of annual flowers, ferns, ivy, and greens necessary to fill the approximately 50 containers symmetrically arranged around her property, including a wrap-around patio and courtyard. To protect early plantings from frost, she temporarily keeps them on a table near the house, covered with a sheet at night. The containers themselves are chosen to align with the garden's refined aesthetic, consisting of black wrought-iron urns, stone urns, or cement pots. The outdoor furniture also adheres to this monochromatic scheme. On the patio facing the river, cream-colored furniture provides a soft contrast, while a nearby pool area features black wrought iron tables, chairs, a bench, and chaise lounges with white seat cushions. In the pebbled courtyard at the front of the home, three white wooden benches are positioned around a water feature, each flanked by pots of white petunias. This courtyard serves as a relaxing spot for the Mayers to enjoy evening wine, accompanied by the soothing sound of bubbling water. The architectural elements and natural surroundings seamlessly integrate with the garden's design. The white blooms offer a gentle counterpoint to the clean lines of the pool and furniture. Even a birdhouse is white, its post framed by white New Guinea impatiens and bordered by precisely pruned boxwood walls, reminiscent of an English garden. Mayer's attention to detail extends to the flowering trees on her property, with dogwoods and viburnum also producing white blossoms. On the side yard, birch trees likely influenced the black and white decor by the poolside. The house itself, with its natural shingles, white trim, and black shutters, acts as a dignified backdrop, directing the gaze beyond the tall grasses and rolling lawn towards the dynamic views of the river. Mayer emphasizes that her decorating choices aim to avoid visual conflict, allowing the natural beauty outside to be the focal point. #GardenDesign #EssexHome #WhiteGarden #LandscapeDesign #TranquilGardens #OutdoorLiving #MonochromaticGarden #HomeRenovation #ContainerGardening #GardenDesign #EssexHome #WhiteGarden #LandscapeDesign #TranquilGardens #OutdoorLiving #MonochromaticGarden #HomeRenovation #ContainerGardening
