Your Kitchen Lighting Is a Missed Opportunity for Storage
In a Montauk, New York, rental property renovation, designer Robert McKinley and his wife, Kate Nauta, addressed a low kitchen ceiling not by raising it, but by cleverly integrating a multi-functional design element. McKinley developed a floating wood structure over the kitchen island that serves the dual purpose of providing both lighting and storage. This innovative fixture, crafted from oiled white oak, features a rounded top equipped with custom brass S-hooks. These hooks are designed to hold various kitchen items, such as heavy stainless steel pans and wooden spatulas, offering a more refined alternative to conventional industrial pot racks.
The design choice to incorporate a pot rack directly into the lighting fixture addresses both aesthetic and practical concerns. It creates a cozy atmosphere by bringing storage and light closer to the user, and it optimizes space in a kitchen where a traditional, bulky pot rack might feel overwhelming. The fixture's placement above the island, where much of the cooking activity occurs, ensures that frequently used tools are easily accessible. This thoughtful integration enhances the kitchen's functionality without sacrificing style, providing a clean and organized look.
Beneath the wooden structure, the fixture incorporates a smart LED light system from Lucetta Lighting. This lighting solution is notable for its dim-to-warm feature, which emulates the warmth and dimmability typically associated with incandescent bulbs. This advanced lighting technology allows for adjustable ambiance, from bright task lighting for cooking to softer, warmer light for casual gatherings. The strategic positioning of this dimmable light directly above the stovetop, which is seamlessly integrated into a stone counter, illuminates the primary workspace effectively. This ensures that all necessary items and cooking processes are clearly visible, improving both efficiency and safety in the kitchen. The designer highlights the importance of well-considered lighting in a workspace, extending the logic from a desk to the culinary environment.
The overall design demonstrates a creative approach to maximizing utility in a compact or challenging space. By combining lighting with storage in an elegant, custom-made unit, the kitchen gains both practical benefits and a distinctive aesthetic. The use of natural materials like oiled white oak and brass, coupled with modern LED technology, reflects a balance between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary innovation. This solution not only solves a functional problem but also contributes to the overall character and efficiency of the kitchen, transforming a potential design constraint into a unique and highly functional focal point.
