You Won't Recognize This IKEA LACK Table After One Stunning Transformation
The IKEA LACK coffee table, a common fixture in many homes due to its affordability and minimalist design, serves as a popular foundation for various DIY customization projects. The simplicity of IKEA products makes them ideal for hacks, allowing individuals to create more expensive-looking furniture pieces at a fraction of the cost. One such viral transformation, originally credited to TikToker @saraalexandrahome and further popularized by @theursulaedit, demonstrates how to convert a standard LACK coffee table into a sleek, modern piece reminiscent of high-end designs. This particular hack involves combining the LACK table with an IKEA EKET storage system.
Several furniture retailers offer coffee tables with similar aesthetic qualities but at significantly higher prices. For instance, the Vayle concrete coffee table from CB2 retails for $499, while Joss & Main's Alibi coffee table is priced at $780. All Modern's Dove pedestal coffee table reaches $830. The IKEA LACK table hack presents an economical alternative, enabling individuals to achieve a comparable look for a much lower investment.
The core components for this DIY project include an IKEA LACK coffee table and an IKEA EKET cabinet. The LACK coffee table comes in two sizes: a smaller version measuring 35 ⅜ by 21 ⅝ inches, costing $44.99, and a larger version at 46 ½ by 30 ¾ inches, priced at $69.99. The EKET cabinet, which costs $20, measures 13 ¾ inches in width, 9 ⅞ inches in depth, and 13 ¾ inches in height. For assembly, a strong adhesive such as UniBond No More Nails, available for around $17, is required.
The transformation process begins by either disassembling a pre-existing LACK table to remove its legs and bottom shelf or, if starting with a new product, simply using the tabletop. The EKET cabinet is then assembled according to its instructions. Once assembled, adhesive is applied to the front edges of the EKET cabinet, which is then positioned and firmly attached to the underside of the LACK tabletop. To ensure a strong bond, heavy objects are placed on top to weigh down the pieces while the adhesive cures. A minimum drying period of 24 hours is recommended before the newly constructed coffee table is flipped over. This process results in a high-end-looking coffee table for an estimated total cost ranging from $80 to $110.
Further customization options can enhance the appearance of the transformed coffee table. While the TikTok example uses white-finished components, the laminate surface of IKEA furniture typically requires sanding with 120-grit sandpaper to remove the finish and prepare it for paint adhesion. After sanding and wiping away dust, the piece can be primed and painted to match any desired aesthetic. To achieve a concrete-like finish, a thin layer of cement can be applied to the surface. Alternatively, fluted millwork can be added around the table's base to create a reeded effect. High-quality vinyl contact paper can also be used to mimic the appearance of marble on the tabletop, allowing for a unique and personalized statement piece.
