How to Upgrade an Ikea Docksta to Look Like a $4,000 Mid-Century Table
Self-taught designer and blogger Lisa Herland successfully transformed a $179 Ikea Docksta table into a piece that closely resembles a $4,000 Saarinen table, a renowned mid-century modern design. Herland's budget-friendly upgrade, costing only $15, utilized readily available materials: black spray paint and marble-patterned contact paper. This DIY project provides an accessible alternative for enthusiasts of mid-century modern aesthetics who might find the original Saarinen tables prohibitively expensive.
The original Saarinen tables, designed by Finnish architect Eero Saarinen, are celebrated for their distinctive 'tulip' shape and the architect's stated goal of eliminating the visual clutter of table legs. These tables command high prices due to their brand prestige, designer heritage, and the use of luxury materials like white Carrara marble. Herland's hack offers a way to achieve a similar sophisticated look without the significant financial investment.
To begin the transformation, Herland acquired Rust-Oleum Universal spray paint in a satin black finish, suitable for various surfaces, including the plastic base of the Docksta table. This choice of color was intended to conceal scuffs and provide a sleek, modern appearance. For the tabletop, she selected a marble-patterned contact paper, costing $9, which emulates the elegant look of the marble found on authentic Saarinen tables.
The nine-step process began with a thorough cleaning of the Ikea table, followed by its disassembly to separate the top from the base. Herland then proceeded to spray paint the table's base. After the paint had dried completely, the table was reassembled. The next steps involved carefully applying the marble contact paper to the tabletop. This included aligning the pattern, trimming excess paper, slowly peeling and adhering the paper to the surface, and using a flat edge to smooth out any air bubbles. The final touch involved using a hairdryer to shrink and seal the contact paper around the table's edges, ensuring a seamless and polished finish. Herland documented this process in an Instagram video, demonstrating the simplicity and effectiveness of the upgrade.
Herland expressed satisfaction with the transformation, noting that the combination of contact paper and spray paint significantly elevated the table's overall aesthetic. This project showcases how simple and affordable modifications can drastically alter the appearance of furniture, offering a luxurious look for a fraction of the cost. The technique can also be applied to other furniture pieces, such as nightstands and dressers, providing versatile options for home decor enthusiasts.
