Her vision for the new home was to create a very welcoming and safe space, reflecting her approach to life and her desire to host friends and family. A unique feature of the flat that caught her attention was a curved wall running along the window-facing side of the living/dining area and an adjacent bedroom. While many homebuyers might view such a feature as a challenge or a source of dead space, Medha saw its potential for creativity and a fluid use of space. She collaborated with an interior designer to transform this seemingly troublesome characteristic into a central design element. The renovation began by sacrificing the bedroom next to the original living/dining area to create a larger, combined open-plan space. To address the curved wall, a custom-built wraparound “bench” made of grey laminate was installed. This bench originated as a narrow trickle from the ceiling in one corner, flowing down the wall and extending along the entire perimeter of the living/dining area, effectively shaping the space into a round, pond-like form. This integrated piece serves multiple functions: as additional seating, a display area for artwork, and discreetly houses open and concealed storage for Medha’s extensive collection of books, ceramics, and art supplies. A key undertaking involved adding architectural elements, such as a new fireplace and hallway arches on the main level. Despite the significant budget allocation for these additions, the owners found immense joy in their new living space, particularly the fireplace, which became a cherished spot for reading. In the kitchen, the team opted for luxurious black refinished cabinets, new brass hardware, and desirable quartzite countertops and backsplashes. A custom-designed hood with decorative wood slats, brass shelving, and a breakfast banquette with integrated storage became a focal point. Throughout the rest of the home, new decorative lighting, hardware, furnishings, accessories, and art were carefully chosen to enhance the overall aesthetic. The master bedroom received arched bookshelves and a custom four-poster bed. The master bathroom was expanded by approximately 60 square feet to accommodate a comfortable walk-in shower and a double vanity. Material selections prioritized durability and visual impact within a limited budget, including quartzite in the kitchen and ceramic tile and quartz in the master bath. Aged brass was chosen for hardware and lighting fixtures to evoke Art Deco glamour, while matte black plumbing fixtures provided a contemporary tie-in. Sourcing efforts focused on local vendors, with Stone Fleury assisting with furnishings and Wayfair providing crucial support when needed. The furniture and decor were selected to create an elegant, yet versatile space suitable for both lounging and entertaining. Given the owners' elderly dog, durability and comfort were paramount considerations for all furniture choices. A custom-upholstered recliner was acquired to meet the husband's specific request. Many other unique pieces and accessories were sourced from vintage shops and the Alameda Flea Market, and the custom banquette was crafted by local woodworkers and upholsterers. Natural materials like plywood and timber veneer clad surfaces, concealing numerous smart features such as voice-activated synthesizers, lighting and air-conditioning controls, curtain mechanisms, a retractable coffee table, projection screens, and smart door locks. Lam's interpretation of a "smart" home is entirely client-driven, allowing spaces to transform based on daily needs. The living room was elevated on a wooden platform, providing extensive underfloor storage. A section of this platform houses a high-tech coffee table that can be raised for tea ceremonies and social gatherings or lowered flush with the floor to create a lounge or play area for their son. Further enhancing functionality, a gray, timber-veneer TV cabinet spans almost an entire living room wall. This cabinet incorporates display nooks for treasured items, designed according to Feng Shui principles with a symmetrical form reminiscent of the Chinese character for "wood." It also conceals a folding timber partition, which can be deployed to create an additional bedroom for guests. Louvres at the top of the partition ensure ventilation, while embossed strip glass allows natural light to penetrate while maintaining privacy. An open-plan kitchen was introduced adjacent to the living space, and the original kitchen was repurposed into a maid's room and storage area. The quartz dining bench and timber benches feature built-in storage to maintain a clutter-free environment. Other intelligent design elements include a timber platform in the son's bedroom, which provides hidden storage and serves as seating for a desk, and a concealed make-up table in the master bedroom. In early 2020, Julie Chung and Kent Yu, cofounders of the hair-tool brand T3, and their three children faced increasing space constraints in their 4,000-square-foot Spanish-style home in the Pacific Palisades due to the pandemic's stay-at-home era. Despite having no initial plans to move, a nearby 11,000-square-foot spec house, previously deemed too large, began to look appealing. They purchased the newly completed property and enlisted interior designer Sierra Fox of Studio Mtn to personalize it and counteract its 'spec house' feel.
