The One-And-Done Home Update That Will Totally Transform Your Exterior

The front door is often considered the focal point of a home's exterior, significantly impacting its curb appeal and overall aesthetic. This article details the process and benefits of replacing a front door, drawing from a personal experience with a 1950s ranch-style house in Birmingham, Alabama. The original front door, described as a vestige of the '80s or '90s, featured three small, rectangular glass panes stacked in descending size, which offered limited natural light and did not align with a timeless aesthetic. The primary motivations for replacing the door were to achieve a more timeless exterior look and to increase natural light in the living room. After reviewing numerous options, a 9-lite door was selected, characterized by small, square glass panes on the top half and solid wood on the bottom. This design choice effectively balanced privacy with the desired influx of natural light, and its charming appearance, reminiscent of a Dutch door, was well-suited to the modest architecture of the one-level home. The installation of the new door not only enhanced the home's curb appeal but also significantly brightened the interior living space, making it feel lighter, brighter, and more inviting. To manage costs, a professional installer was hired, but savings were realized by purchasing a more affordable unfinished slab door from Home Depot and painting it independently. The chosen paint color was Sherwin-Williams’ Tricorn Black (SW 6258), a neutral and enduring shade that complemented the existing black shutters and taupe-painted brick. This strategic color choice helped to avoid a cascading series of home projects, ensuring that the new door seamlessly integrated with the home's current exterior palette. For those not ready for a full door replacement, alternative, budget-friendly options exist to refresh a front door. Repainting the door in a new hue is presented as an easy, low-risk method to update the exterior without significant expense. Additionally, swapping out existing hardware for a different style, such as an antique brass lever handle and deadbolt combination, can also contribute to a refreshed first impression. Such a change was incorporated during the featured door replacement to add character. Spring is identified as an ideal time for a front door update, whether replacing or repainting. This is primarily due to favorable weather conditions, as moderate temperatures and lower humidity levels simplify the process and improve paint application and drying. Undertaking this project in spring also allows homeowners to enhance their home's exterior just as gardens bloom and the natural environment becomes more vibrant, contributing to a cohesive and cheerful overall presentation of the property. #HomeImprovement #CurbAppeal #FrontDoorReplacement #ExteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #NaturalLight #BudgetFriendlyUpdates #SpringProjects #HomeDecor #HomeImprovement #CurbAppeal #FrontDoorReplacement #ExteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #NaturalLight #BudgetFriendlyUpdates #SpringProjects #HomeDecor
