Ten L-shaped kitchens with extensive countertop space
This lookbook explores various examples of L-shaped kitchens, a popular and practical layout featuring two work surfaces meeting at a 90-degree angle. These kitchens often fit into corners, maximizing space efficiency, but can also incorporate a peninsula for additional workspace or to define areas within a larger open-plan layout. When space permits, kitchen islands can be integrated into the center of the L-shape to further enhance functionality and provide extra countertop or storage options. The L-shaped configuration is one of the most common kitchen layouts, alongside U-shaped, one-wall, island, galley, and peninsula kitchens.
The featured designs showcase a diverse range of styles and materials. One example is an L-shaped kitchen set within a vaulted space in a traditional Swiss farmhouse, where stainless steel counters and cabinetry provide a modern contrast to the historic setting. This design includes a cooker positioned to offer views of the Swiss valley and a serving hatch connecting the kitchen to the dining area through a thick stone wall. Another illustration highlights a birch plywood kitchen in a Norwegian cabin, positioned against a corner window. This design features a steel sink with a large drainer and an electric cooker, all integrated into minimalist cabinetry with flush wooden countertops and cutout handles.
A London flat features an L-shaped kitchen beneath a part-sloping wood-lined ceiling that mirrors the garden's topography. This kitchen combines white floor units, a marble countertop with an embedded sink, and an electric hob, all situated below a wide window overlooking the garden. In New Zealand, the Oneroa House showcases a timber-finished kitchen with plywood units lining two walls, featuring a sink positioned by a large window that offers views of the Hauraki Gulf. The materials in this design were chosen for their texture and durability.
For communal spaces, the Stine Goya headquarters in Copenhagen presents an L-shaped kitchen with custom brass-fronted IKEA cabinets by Reform, complemented by a black laminate countertop and matching black appliances against butter-yellow walls and light timber floors. A Belgian apartment features an L-shaped kitchen where birch cabinetry is stained a seaweed green, designed to echo its coastal surroundings, with Alga Marina marble countertops adding a neutral element. In a Föhr apartment in Germany, an L-shaped kitchen is integrated into a converted farmhouse hayloft, tucked beneath a sloping roof. The walls are adorned with thousands of ceramic tiles, each drilled with a hole to create a polka-dot effect, while wooden base cabinetry blends with the flooring and houses appliances, including a circular sink, electric stove, and oven arranged compactly.
Lagado Architects' Workhome-Playhome in the Netherlands displays an L-shaped kitchen characterized by ashwood cabinetry, burnt-orange niches, blue terrazzo floors, and teal cupboards. White tiled walls frame teal overhead cabinets above a sink, stovetop, and granite worktops. The distinct blue terrazzo flooring differentiates the kitchen from the adjacent living space's light wood floors, and a breakfast bar extending from the work area offers additional prep space. The Corsega Apartment in Spain features a minimalist L-shaped kitchen with white cabinetry, steel appliances, grey-veined marble, and exposed pipework. Overhead cabinetry and a marble splashback extend across the counter, which also functions as a breakfast bar. A steel oven and microwave are integrated into the cabinetry, harmonizing with the metallic handles and exposed extractor fan piping.
Finally, Extension One in the UK by Denizen Works incorporates an L-shaped kitchen where an oak countertop wraps around white cabinetry. A white-tiled splashback extends below a chunky oak shelf and a rectangular window overlooking the garden. A large L-shaped skylight, supported by oak beams, is positioned above the counter containing the sink, allowing natural light to flood the space. These examples demonstrate the versatility and aesthetic possibilities of L-shaped kitchens in various architectural contexts and design preferences.
