Ten installations by Kriskadecor that use chain curtains to dramatic effect
Kriskadecor specializes in creating bespoke hanging installations from colorful aluminum chains, which can serve various functions from space dividers to ceiling features. The Spanish brand, founded in 1926, has refined its production process over decades, integrating 20 percent recycled content and anodizing the metal to enhance durability and ensure colorfastness. The manufacturing process balances industrial techniques with meticulous human oversight, where technicians carefully inspect each project to ensure quality and precision.
One notable project is the MiQ office in New York, designed by Sydness Architects, Design Republic, and Emma Louise Ingham. Here, a gradient curtain of sunset-colored chains introduces a vibrant contrast against the office's neutral interiors. This divider intelligently segments the space into open, collaborative work areas, allowing natural light to permeate the interior while maintaining an airy feel.
In the Linder Cycling Hotel in Italy, high in the Dolomite Alps, Perathoner Architects integrated Kriskadecor's Nieva de Noche curtains, designed by Claire Davies, to offer privacy in the spa area. These curtains feature chainlinks in various shades, including deep blue, black, and pale silver, forming intricate patterns that evoke raindrops and complement the serene, moody palette of the spa's interior.
For Nando's Altrincham in the UK, Stac Architecture commissioned an installation where the aluminum links are lacquered in a saturated yellow from Kriskadecor's Luxe Edition palette. This lacquering process provides a matte finish and improved durability, distinguishing it from the anodized links. The custom-made piece reflects the brand's capacity for specific aesthetic and functional requirements, with an extensive range of Pantone and RAL colors available for custom projects.
At Aldgate Tower in the UK, Basha Franklin utilized Kriskadecor's chains to mitigate the vast verticality of the atrium, creating a more inviting atmosphere. Three cylindrical segments of chains, featuring an ombre color scheme, are suspended from the ceiling. These segments vary in size and complement the seating areas below, effectively breaking down the immense scale of the space.
In the Westfield Mall of the Netherlands, MVSA Architects created a striking installation in the cafeteria using over 230 kilometers of gold and brown chains. Arranged into 30 curved panels, the chains meander through the space, mimicking natural air currents and fostering a sense of intimacy within the large commercial environment.
Kohakinho restaurant in Switzerland, designed by Bruno Huber Architetti, features Kriskadecor's chains to create an underwater ambiance. A sculptural fish-shaped lamp hangs from the ceiling, while a feature wall, with an orange, brown, and gold gradient transitioning to various blue hues, evokes the impression of an aquatic setting, seamlessly aligning with the sushi restaurant's theme.
The KI20 Business Centre in Hungary, renovated by MadiLancos Studio, incorporates delicate champagne-colored aluminum lengths spanning three floors in its interior courtyard. These chains add a touch of elegance and discreetly conceal the building's plumbing and electrical systems, blending functionality with aesthetic appeal in the Neo-Renaissance-style office.
On the exterior of Archiproducts Milano in Italy, Serena Confalonieri utilized Kriskadecor's durable anodized aluminum chains as cladding. The custom installation, mounted with a special fixing system, conforms to the facade's shape and displays a vibrant geometric pattern, showcasing the material's versatility for outdoor applications.
Finally, in Cafe Karavaevi in Russia, Marina Bagrova designed an installation with winding strips of apricot-colored aluminum chains around overhead lamps. These fixtures diffuse the harsh industrial light, introducing a soft, gentle glow and adding warmth and a sense of inviting comfort to the Moscow cafe's interior. Kriskadecor's adaptability in design and application is consistently demonstrated across these diverse projects, whether for aesthetic enhancement, spatial division, or practical concealment, showcasing its unique contribution to modern interior and exterior design. The brand emphasizes the perfect balance between industrial production and the human element in crafting its custom installations. Each project underlines the customization potential of the chain-link fixtures, offering varied colors, shapes, and sizes to suit different architectural and interior design needs, for both indoor and outdoor settings.
