Tæpper rugs by Michelle Macarounas for Tsar Carpets
The Tæpper rug collection, a collaboration between Tsar Carpets and designer Michelle Macarounas, introduces a series of rugs characterized by monochrome geometric patterns. Michelle Macarounas, the founder of Sydney-based Infinite Design Studio, initiated the concept for these rugs, drawing inspiration from the principles of modernism and mid-20th-century art, specifically the dynamic mobile sculptures created by Alexander Calder.
The design process involved Tsar Carpets' in-house team in Melbourne, who were instrumental in translating Macarounas' artistic vision into tangible rugs. They achieved a sense of three-dimensionality and depth in the designs by skillfully manipulating the pile density and fiber types used in the rugs. This technical expertise allowed the abstract geometric patterns to manifest with a tactile quality.
Macarounas articulated her objective for the collection as creating stylish area rugs that transcend mere floor coverings, aiming for them to be perceived as distinctive art pieces. Her goal was to infuse interior spaces with an eclectic sensibility through these designs. Teresa Cerebek, a senior designer at Tsar Carpets, elaborated on the collaborative effort, explaining that their team meticulously transformed each graphic pattern into artistic area rugs. This translation involved careful consideration of colorways, subtle textures, and optimal pile height to realize Macarounas' original concept.
The Tæpper collection comprises four distinct monochrome designs, each named with Danish words that reflect their aesthetic: Lyserød (Pink), Monokromatisk (Monochromatic), Grøn (Green), and Fløde (Cream). The rugs are hand-tufted using the finest grade of New Zealand wool, a material choice that contributes to their durability and soft texture. This combination of material quality and hand-tufting craftsmanship ensures that each rug is not only visually appealing but also robust and comfortable underfoot. The collection thus offers a sophisticated addition to home decor, blending artistic inspiration with high-quality production.
