RIL’s fire-retardant Recron FS for enhanced safety
Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) is set to showcase an expanded range of Recron FS, its fire-retardant textile solution, at Heimtextil Frankfurt. This follows a successful introductory launch at MoOD2017 in Belgium. Recron FS combines safety and aesthetics, addressing the increasing incidence and destructive power of fire, which is a major hazard causing fatalities and property destruction. Textiles often contribute to the rapid spread of fires due to their flammability and ubiquitous presence in homes, offices, hospitals, cinema halls, hotels, cars, and airplanes. These materials, including seat covers, carpets, and curtains, are essential for making establishments appealing and comfortable, but studies consistently link them to the quick propagation of fire.
RIL developed Recron FS, a fire-retardant polyester, as a solution. This innovation not only imbues fabrics with the highest safety standards by making them fire-retardant but also enhances their aesthetic qualities. Recron FS is positioned as RIL's unique offering to the textile industry, aiming to provide the most beautiful and safest textiles. In the global fire-retardant home textile market, which is estimated at 340 million square meters, fire-retardant polyester constitutes a significant 33%. Traditional technologies for fire-retardant fabrics, available since the 1970s, had limitations concerning the permanency of fire-retardancy and the toxicity of chemicals used. These older methods were typically restricted to flame-retardant levels below 6500 ppm of phosphorous content and exclusively utilized virgin polyester.
RIL's new technology for Recron FS overcomes these limitations by enabling flame retardancy from 7000 ppm to 25000 ppm, depending on the application. Critically, this technology also allows for the use of recycled polyester as a feedstock to produce permanently flame-retardant polyester, all while maintaining fabric tenacity. Recron FS is highlighted as a sustainable technology due to its long lifespan, cost-effectiveness, permanent fire-retardant performance, color permanency, and the integration of recycled polyester. The fire-retardancy is achieved through a physical and chemical bonding of phosphorous with the polyester matrix, ensuring that the textile raw material resists fire spread permanently.
Manufactured under environmentally friendly conditions, Recron FS is a part of RIL’s responsible care product line. It is highly suitable for fire-retardant fabrics in the transportation industry (aviation, marine, roadways), as well as in public spaces like cinemas, hospitals, hotels, banquet halls, libraries, and household furnishings. With a diverse range of variants, Recron FS can be woven into fabrics for curtains, carpets, and upholstery, and can be dyed in various attractive colors. Its molecularly bound fire-retardancy means it can be washed without losing its protective properties, shine, color, or texture.
Recron FS provides desired fire protection across various industries and households. Its lifelong fire-retardant nature enhances safety and reduces life cycle costs. The fabric also protects interiors and furnishings from fading due to sunlight exposure, reduces sun glare, and helps lower air-conditioner loads. Certified by Oekotex Standard 100, it meets stringent human-ecological standards, making it suitable even for baby products. Recron FS offers excellent dyeability, easy care, and abrasion resistance, making it appealing to weavers who seek high-quality, durable, and easy-to-maintain end-products, requiring no special chemical processing or extra care in washing or drying.
RIL offers strong technical support and promotional services, ensuring all Recron FS fabrics undergo rigorous fire-retardant tests. The company collaborates with fabric makers to implement sustainable processes for producing permanently flame-retardant fabrics. If a fabric fails tests, the Recron FS team assists in problem identification and solution. Successful completion of tests allows fabric makers to use the Recron FS trademark, assuring quality, adherence to standards, and high performance to the entire value chain and end customers. Recron FS has passed RIL’s internal R&D; tests and stringent evaluations at independent global testing centers. Reliance Polyester Business, RIL's petrochemicals division, is the world's largest integrated polyester fiber and yarn producer, with a capacity of 2.5 million tonnes per annum, and Recron is its flagship brand. RIL maintains its leadership in the polyester business through integrated operations, economies of scale, diversified products, and significant investment in polyester research and development.
