Repeat After Us: Small Bathrooms Can Have Architectural Character

The article challenges the common misconception that luxury in bathrooms is synonymous with expansive, open spaces, as popularized by figures like Kim Kardashian West's oversized shower. It argues that even small bathrooms can achieve significant architectural character and a sense of luxury through strategic design elements, particularly the use of arches. Instead of resorting to costly and often impractical renovations that involve knocking down walls, the author suggests focusing on incorporating structural details like arches, which inherently convey grandeur and visual interest. The article highlights that arches, historically used in doorways, windows, and mirrors, offer a classic and impactful design solution for compact bathrooms. This approach not only saves money but also creates a distinctive aesthetic that rivals the impression of larger, more conventional luxury bathrooms. Several examples are provided to illustrate how different design choices can leverage the arch motif to enhance small spaces. One approach, exemplified by Dabito's design, involves embracing repetition. Here, a glass shower door with a curved silhouette is mirrored by a floor-length mirror, creating visual depth and emphasizing clear sightlines, making the bathroom feel larger and more cohesive. Another technique focuses on setting the scene with tile. Beatriz Rose's design, inspired by the Greek Isles, uses handmade blue-and-white Talavera tiles in a herringbone pattern on the shower's back wall. This vibrant, zigzag pattern, visible even when the shower door is closed, tricks the eye into perceiving a more expansive area. The article also suggests leaving the shower open, as demonstrated by Decus Interiors. In this design, a rose gold-lined glass partition serves to contain water while simultaneously softening the rigid lines of the surrounding elements, such as floor tiles and a skylight. This creates a sense of openness without sacrificing functionality. A different strategy is to go vertical with subway tile. Owen Architecture's design utilizes arches to draw the eye upwards, with vertically laid subway tiles accentuating height. Colorful squares are incorporated within the arch and as a baseboard for contrast, adding a playful yet sophisticated touch. Finally, the article advises focusing on the floor to make an impact. In a Spanish Revival-inspired bathroom designed by Nancy Scheinholtz and Laura Blankstein, bold tilework on the floor is allowed to shine, with other elements kept minimal. This approach ensures that the archway appears as a natural, integrated part of the design, rather than an forced addition to fit a specific style. By adopting these creative design strategies, small bathrooms can transcend their size limitations and achieve remarkable architectural character and a luxurious feel. #SmallBathrooms #BathroomDesign #ArchitecturalArches #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #DesignInspiration #TileDesign #SpaceSavingSolutions #SmallBathrooms #BathroomDesign #ArchitecturalArches #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #DesignInspiration #TileDesign #SpaceSavingSolutions
