Read This Interior Designer's Tips For Modernizing a Space Using Color
The article discusses interior designer Young Huh's approach to modernizing traditional spaces using color, specifically highlighting Benjamin Moore's new CENTURY paint line. Young Huh's design philosophy centers on understanding a homeowner's vision for their home life, integrating it with the existing architecture, and telling a unique story through art, materials, textures, patterns, and colors, creating a blend of antique and modern flair.
She recently worked on a 1920s Dutch Colonial home in Westchester, her third project with the homeowners, who sought a fresh update while preserving the historical integrity of their residence. For this project, she utilized Benjamin Moore's CENTURY collection, which is characterized by its soft touch matte finish and a curated palette of 75 pre-mixed colors. Huh emphasizes that CENTURY paints offer a depth and richness of color that differentiates them from other paints. These colors, she explains, reflect historical house paints but with a modern interpretation, aligning perfectly with the goal of respecting the home's history while making it functional and relevant for a contemporary, active family. The specific colors chosen for each room were selected to evoke a particular mood and feeling desired by the client.
Huh provided examples of color choices within the home: the study, used by the lady of the house, was painted in BLUE MUSCARI U9, chosen for its activating yet deep and thoughtful qualities. For the son's room, COBALT U8 was selected, described as a classic true blue with an unusual vibrancy. The oldest son's room features VIRIDIAN O6, a green that complemented retro posters and a masculine aesthetic. Another room was decorated in LIGHT BERYL P4, a teal shade that harmonized with existing furnishings and pink accents, contributing to a sophisticated and grounded atmosphere.
Regarding current color trends, Young Huh notes a gravitation towards vibrant cobalt blues, rich navy, and various shades of yellow, particularly saturated marigold hues, which she believes feel fresh and new in contemporary color schemes. Her insights provide practical advice on how to use color to update and personalize a living space, balancing historical context with modern preferences.
