Pop Up Grocer’s New Shop Confirms That This Retro Flooring Material Is Cool Again

Pop Up Grocer has opened its first permanent New York shop, redefining the grocery store experience with a focus on fun and aesthetic appeal. Breaking away from traditional grocery store environments characterized by fluorescent lighting and generic music, the new Greenwich Village location features Memphis-style floor lamps, carefully curated pantry goods, and extensive use of checkered patterns. Emily Schildt, the founder, has previously launched nine short-term shops across various cities, and this latest venture maintains a modern, bright, and light ambiance, incorporating Pop Up Grocer's signature cobalt blue accents within a more neutral palette. A standout design element in the new shop is the warm brown and butter yellow checkered vinyl tile flooring. This material was chosen to create a comfortable and inviting space for daily visitors. Vinyl composition tile (VCT) is a practical choice for high-traffic areas such as industrial kitchens and classrooms due to its affordability and durability. Armstrong tiles, for instance, are readily available and can be purchased for under $2 per square foot, with installation typically completed within a day or two, even with intricate cuts. The material is also known for its ease of maintenance, as it can be buffed, refinished, and individual damaged squares can be replaced without extensive renovation. Traditionally, VCT has not been associated with high style, but the Pop Up Grocer's design challenges this perception. Schildt and the store's designer, Jen Levy, intentionally selected vinyl flooring from the outset, aiming to evoke a nostalgic yet modern aesthetic reminiscent of classic old grocery stores. This choice aligns with a broader trend observed in other specialty retail spaces like Catbird and Wine and Eggs, where designers are embracing vinyl for its ability to blend old-school charm with contemporary appeal. The material's accessible, unfussy, and fun qualities mirror the overall experience Pop Up Grocer aims to provide. This resurgence of checkered flooring extends beyond retail settings and is increasingly being adopted in residential spaces, particularly kitchens and laundry rooms. While high-end options like marble or limestone tile are often used in homes, vinyl offers a budget-friendly alternative for renovations without compromising on style. By carefully selecting chic color combinations, as demonstrated by Levy and Schildt, homeowners can achieve a sophisticated look with vinyl, making it a viable and stylish option for those looking to renovate on a budget. #InteriorDesign #FlooringTrends #VinylTile #RetailDesign #HomeRenovation #BudgetDecor #CheckeredPattern #DesignInspiration #InteriorDesign #FlooringTrends #VinylTile #RetailDesign #HomeRenovation #BudgetDecor #CheckeredPattern #DesignInspiration
