Philips Hue Tento: Simple ceiling lights about to be launched
Philips Hue is set to launch its new Tento series of ceiling lights, with market availability in the EU anticipated for August. This collection introduces a more straightforward and affordable option compared to existing Philips Hue ceiling lights. The Tento series, initially revealed in June, will offer seven distinct models at launch, each available with either a black or white housing. Plans for angular versions are also in development, though the initial focus is on round designs. Prices for the Hue Tento White start at 69.99 euros for a 29.1 cm model, while Hue Tento White Ambiance models range from 89.99 euros (29.1 cm) to 159.99 euros (54.2 cm). For those seeking color capabilities, the Hue Tento White Ambiance and Colour versions are priced between 109.99 euros (29.1 cm) and 199.99 euros (54.2 cm).
The physical quality of the Hue Tento lights is described as very simple, distinguishing them from premium models like the Hue Surimu or Hue Datura. However, once installed, their primary function is illumination, and they utilize the same advanced LED technology as other Philips Hue ceiling lights, ensuring consistent light output and quality. This means users do not need to compromise on lighting performance despite the simpler build.
Comparing the Hue Tento to previous Philips Hue models highlights its value proposition. For instance, the 42.1 cm Hue Tento, priced at 119.99 euros, offers a maximum brightness of 3,100 lumens. This is significantly brighter than the Philips Hue Aurelle, an earlier LED panel, which provides 2,450 lumens and costs 179.99 euros (including a dimmer switch). The Aurelle is a 39.5 cm round panel with White Ambiance technology. While the Tento does not include a dimmer switch, its lower price point and higher brightness make it an attractive alternative.
Furthermore, the Hue Tento offers advantages over traditional ceiling lights equipped with Hue E27 bulbs. A single White Ambiance E27 bulb costs 39.99 euros and provides up to 1,100 lumens, with a double pack priced at 64.99 euros. When placed in a lampshade or behind a diffuser, some brightness is inevitably lost. The smallest Hue Tento with White Ambiance, at 89.99 euros, offers a dedicated and efficient lighting solution. Additionally, the Hue Tento's slim profile, at just 3.1 centimeters high, provides a more aesthetically pleasing and modern look compared to bulkier fixtures with E27 bulbs, which can enhance interior design. The design includes a subtle slit that allows a small amount of light to shine towards the ceiling, adding a touch of elegance despite its focus on simplicity. The product is seen as a worthwhile consideration for those looking to expand their smart lighting system with affordable yet high-performing ceiling lights.
