One Designer on How to Make Your Screened-In Porch Usable This Winter

The article explores how to transform often-overlooked spaces like mudrooms and screened-in porches into functional and inviting extensions of the home, drawing inspiration from the Kips Bay Decorator Show House in Dallas. It highlights the potential these areas hold, particularly in maximizing square footage, and provides expert advice from designers Tracy Hardenburg and Erin Sander on how to achieve this transformation. Tracy Hardenburg, who redesigned a quirkily-shaped porch, emphasizes that outdoor spaces should feel like a natural continuation of the interior. Her design approach involved softening the porch's harsh angles with window treatments and installing a stained oak ceiling with geometric woodwork, effectively disguising its original, less appealing nature. Similarly, Erin Sander revamped the mudroom, focusing on making it a key functional area, especially for the winter months. One of the core principles shared by both designers is the importance of practical yet aesthetically pleasing elements. For seating, they recommend using inviting options like a curvy couch, cradle-like armchairs, or a tufted built-in bench. The key to making these pieces suitable for semi-outdoor or high-traffic areas lies in the fabric choice. Perennials fabrics are highlighted for their durability, being fade-, mold-resistant, and bleach-cleanable. Hardenburg used a white, linen-textured Perennials fabric for the porch sofa, while Sander opted for a luxe-looking, performance velvet called Plushy in shell pink for the mudroom bench, demonstrating that practical materials don't have to compromise on style. Effective storage is another crucial aspect for these spaces. For a screened-in porch, which can serve as an ideal entertaining area, floating cabinets are suggested for storing essentials such as decanters, glassware, and melamine plates. Hardenburg's design incorporated glass-framed cabinets and a cordovan backsplash tile, creating a more kitchen-like feel and encouraging its use as a relaxed spot for pre-dinner drinks or post-swim snacks. Lighting plays a significant role in making these spaces usable and appealing, especially at night. The designers emphasize statement light fixtures. Sander installed large metal pendant lamps in the mudroom ceiling, while Hardenburg chose a sculptural ceramic chandelier by Heather Levine for the porch, illustrating how lighting can become a conversation piece and enhance the ambiance. Finally, the article underscores the importance of detailed trimwork in elevating these auxiliary rooms. For the mudroom, intricate woodwork crafted from rift-cut white oak was used to frame the bench, rather than wallpaper, adding a sophisticated touch. On the porch, tiny bits of glass were embedded into the white grout between flagstones to create a subtle pattern. These small, deliberate details, down to switch plates, are presented as crucial for achieving a refined and cohesive look, ensuring these "afterthought" rooms are as meticulously designed as any other part of the home. #ScreenedInPorch #MudroomDesign #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #OutdoorLiving #FunctionalSpaces #DesignTips #KipsBayShowHouse #FabricSelection #ScreenedInPorch #MudroomDesign #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #OutdoorLiving #FunctionalSpaces #DesignTips #KipsBayShowHouse #FabricSelection
