Mum reveals how she turned an old pergola into a spectacular outdoor alfresco with a theatre room
An interior stylist from Melbourne, Emma, has showcased a remarkable transformation of her backyard pergola into a versatile alfresco and theatre room. This project, completed with her husband in just four weeks, converted an underutilized outdoor structure into a warm, welcoming, and functional space for their family. The primary motivation for this renovation was the desire to maximize the usability of the pergola area, which was previously neglected. The couple envisioned a space that could serve as a bright alfresco area during the day and transition into a cozy theatre room by night.
The renovation involved several key structural and aesthetic changes. To enclose the space while maintaining an open, airy feel, a wall of windows was installed, overlooking their garden. The existing dull brown brickwork was painted over, significantly brightening the area and contributing to the desired aesthetic. Essential for comfort, insulation was added throughout the structure, alongside new heating and cooling systems to ensure the room could be enjoyed year-round, regardless of Melbourne's varied climate. The concrete floor was upgraded with an underlay and laminate floorboards, enhancing both the appearance and the comfort of the space.
Emma provided specific details on the construction process, noting that her husband undertook the carpentry work, constructing wood frames for the walls. HardiePlank weatherboards were utilized for the exterior, offering durability and a clean finish, while plaster was used for the interior walls, ready for painting. The entire room was painted with Dulux's 'builders white,' a choice that reinforced the objective of a bright and spacious environment. The installation of a large split system in the corner of the room was crucial for climate control, making the area comfortable even when outdoor temperatures are extreme. The total cost for renovating the 55-square-meter space amounted to approximately $30,000.
A significant feature of the new space is its dual functionality as a theatre room. Emma's husband, who initiated this aspect of the project, installed a Samsung projector that delivers 4K quality visuals, comparable to a television. The projector's clarity allows for clear viewing even during daylight hours, making the theatre experience accessible at any time. This technological addition caters to evening entertainment, fulfilling the couple's vision of a multi-purpose area.
Following the structural renovations, Emma, leveraging her interior styling expertise, furnished the space to create a luxurious Hamptons-style ambiance. This included incorporating elegant sofa lounges, soft rugs, and carefully selected plants, alongside various modern home décor items. The sophisticated styling complements the renovated structure, completing the transformation into a highly attractive and comfortable living area. The project garnered widespread positive attention on social media, receiving over 1,400 likes and numerous comments praising it as one of the most beautiful pergola transformations observed by users. The feedback highlighted the 'wow factor' and 'dreamy' quality of the makeover, emphasizing its brilliance and effectiveness in converting an old structure into a highly desirable outdoor living space.
