Meet Sylvia Estes | Sculptor and Assistant Gallery Curator

Sylvia Estes is a sculptor and assistant gallery curator who is driven by the aspiration to live a meaningful life and find artfulness in the world. She views her creative pursuits as a lifestyle rather than solely a career, emphasizing that she would continue her artistic endeavors even if her livelihood came from a different source. Estes acknowledges the hard work and sacrifices she made to reach a point where she can securely pursue her art and curation as a supportive endeavor. Her artistic practice involves creating sculptures from discarded and found materials, reflecting her belief that beauty can be cultivated from the mundane and overlooked. A recent project centers on making lighting sculptures from kitchen recycling. This process begins with cutting and taping cereal boxes, followed by papier-mâché layers of newspaper, coupon catalogs, and tissue paper. The resulting sculptural pendants serve both as functional lighting and a method of recycling. Estes integrates her art practice into her daily life, making each piece at home and considering how her creative endeavors align with her sense of self. Estes's varied professional background, including roles as a farmer, cook, teacher, and now gallery manager/assistant curator, has influenced her work. Each experience has provided different mediums and perspectives, shaping her current artistic output. She is particularly interested in the role art plays in daily experiences, encompassing how people eat, interact with nature, and construct and decorate spaces to create narratives and a sense of place. Through her work, Estes aims to demonstrate the pervasive potential for artfulness in the environment. When asked about showing a friend the Hudson Valley, where she resides, Estes highlights the area's natural beauty and rich history. Her itinerary would include exploring mountainous views along the river and visiting quaint towns like Germantown or Tivoli for farm-to-table meals at establishments such as Gaskins or The Corner. She appreciates the Hudson Valley's slower pace of life, its winding country roads, the distinct beauty of each season, and a local artistic community that is both inspired and grounded. Estes dedicates her success to her brother, Zeke Estes, whom she describes as kind, thoughtful, and creative. Zeke also works in the art world at a Manhattan gallery and is an accomplished artist known for his intricate line drawings and prints. Sylvia credits her brother for inspiring her to work diligently, stay active, and pursue her dreams, emphasizing that her upbringing involved making art together and that her family's unwavering support has been crucial to her current position. #Sculptor #AssistantGalleryCurator #CreativePath #FoundArt #RecycledArt #LightingSculptures #ArtAndLife #HudsonValley #ArtisticCommunity #Sculptor #AssistantGalleryCurator #CreativePath #FoundArt #RecycledArt #LightingSculptures #ArtAndLife #HudsonValley #ArtisticCommunity
