London’s Chicest New Stay Includes This Space-Saving Kitchen Storage Hack
The Gessner, a new short-stay accommodation in London’s Tottenham Hale neighborhood, offers both guest rooms and fully furnished apartments for longer stays, blending hotel amenities with residential living. Designed by London- and Los Angeles-based Fettle Design Co., the property focuses on optimizing space and enhancing guest experience through thoughtful design. Cofounder Andy Goodwin highlights several key design elements that contribute to the Gessner’s appeal.
In the communal kitchens across the 164 apartments, a significant design choice addresses the need for efficient storage. Glass-front china cabinets facilitate easy access to ceramic dinnerware, while ceiling-hung, predominantly glass shelves store stainless steel cookware. This use of glass prevents the spaces from feeling enclosed and allows natural light, reflected by off-white plastered walls, to circulate. Integrated paneled dishwashers blend seamlessly with lower cabinetry, maintaining a sleek aesthetic.
The design also emphasizes the importance of personal space, particularly for guests in two- and three-bedroom suites. Wavy room dividers are strategically placed to separate open-concept living rooms from kitchens, offering a sense of privacy. In studio apartments, media units serve as partial walls, delineating the lounge area from the bedroom, providing a clear distinction between different zones within a single space.
Outdoor areas are also meticulously designed to enhance comfort and visual appeal. Goodwin stresses the importance of framing views rather than simply providing them. On the rooftop, a long pergola, white umbrellas, and local greenery are utilized to lower the perceived ceiling height, creating a more intimate and less exposed environment for guests, especially in London’s often overcast skies.
The ground floor, which houses common spaces for both residents and hotel guests, features significantly taller ceilings. Fettle Design Co. leveraged this architectural detail by paneling the hotel bar’s walls with tambour stripes. This timber treatment, stained dark, transforms a potentially dated feature into a sophisticated element, evoking the ambiance of an exclusive members’ club rather than a vintage basement. A glossy terrazzo bar top provides a material contrast, adding a touch of luxury to the overall design.
