Learn How to Reupholster an Ottoman in One Day

This DIY Diary entry details the process of reupholstering a circular ottoman, guided by the experience of J.R. Coffin, an architect at Studio Den Den, and her husband George Coffin, an industrial designer. The couple discovered a discarded ottoman and decided to transform it to complement their newly renovated Providence, Rhode Island home, which they purchased from an elderly couple and is undergoing significant updates from its original 1980s aesthetic. The article emphasizes the importance of selecting upholstery fabric that harmonizes with existing furniture, specifically mentioning the choice of faux leather to relate to their leather sofa while maintaining the ottoman's unique character. The reupholstering project began with the careful removal of the ottoman's original fabric. The process involved snipping threads and peeling off the old upholstery while ensuring that existing padding remained intact for reuse. This initial step is critical for understanding the original construction and creating accurate patterns for the new cover. The article highlights the advice of Diane Montgomery, owner of Coventry Lane Upholstery, who recommends marking the old fabric pieces, such as "border" or "top face," to avoid confusion during reassembly. Once the old cover was off, the next step involved creating a template from the disassembled fabric. This required carefully undoing the stitches that connected the top and border pieces and then ironing out the fabric sections to achieve their exact shapes. These flattened pieces served as precise patterns for cutting the new upholstery material. Labeling the top side and the wrong side of the new fabric with chalk or a pen was suggested to ensure correct directional alignment during sewing. Sewing the new upholstery cover began with joining the border and top face sections, ensuring the seam was positioned on the side of the circular face. Attention to the fabric's nap or weave direction was advised, even for seemingly plain materials. A half-inch seam allowance was recommended, utilizing the sewing machine's plate markings for consistent distance from the needle. The authors cautioned against rushing, suggesting hand-cranking the machine when navigating tough materials. Small relief cuts were made in the seam as the circular shape came together, allowing the faux leather to lay smoothly, although care was needed to avoid cutting into the stitches. Fitting the new upholstery onto the ottoman frame was a critical stage. The newly sewn cover was pulled onto the padded frame like a sock, with an emphasis on keeping the border seam straight and vertical. The cover was then secured by stapling it to the bottom side of the frame, starting with four equidistant staples (north, south, east, west) to ensure even tension and proper alignment. A yardstick was suggested for confirming equal spacing. Subsequent staples filled the gaps, working in a pattern (northeast, northwest, southwest, southeast) and then filling in further, always maintaining even spacing and avoiding stapling too close to the edge. The article noted that some gathering or pleating is expected with circular shapes but should be confined to the underside of the frame. Finally, the black dust bottom was reattached and stapled into place. The last step involved reattaching the feet. The Coffins opted for a custom touch by repurposing and spray-painting wooden ball furniture feet, mounting them within the original ottoman's wooden ring to achieve a desired aesthetic where the feet were subtly tucked under the piece, completing the ottoman's transformation from a discarded item to a stylish and functional element of their home. #DIYProject #OttomanReupholstery #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #FurnitureMakeover #UpholsteryFabric #SewingTips #CreativeReuse #HomeDecor #DIYProject #OttomanReupholstery #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #FurnitureMakeover #UpholsteryFabric #SewingTips #CreativeReuse #HomeDecor
