Knoll Brings Back an '80s Design Classic
Joseph D'Urso's Occasional Table, a design introduced in the early 1980s, has been re-released by Knoll. This iconic piece exemplifies D'Urso's design philosophy, which seamlessly integrates industrial aesthetics with minimalist principles. The table, characterized by its welded steel construction, achieved a visual lightness through its carefully considered proportions, creating an illusion of floating on concealed casters.
The original table was available in three distinct sizes: Small, measuring 14.5 inches in height, 22 inches in width, and 22 inches in depth; Medium, at 16 inches in height, 27 inches in width, and 27 inches in depth; and Large, with dimensions of 14.5 inches in height, 48 inches in width, and 48 inches in depth. These size options provided versatility, allowing the table to adapt to various spatial requirements and functions within a living environment. Similarly, the original color palette included Black, Crimson, and Stainless, offering choices that ranged from bold to understated, catering to diverse interior design preferences of the era.
While the exact discontinuation date of the table in the 2000s remains unconfirmed, Knoll's decision to reintroduce this piece marks a revival of a significant design from the past. The re-released Occasional Table maintains the original dimensions and color options, ensuring fidelity to D'Urso's initial vision. The availability of three sizes (Small, Medium, and Large) continues to provide functional adaptability, while the three color choices (Black, Crimson, and Stainless) offer classic and contemporary aesthetic appeal.
Further enhancing its customization options, the table's glass top is offered in three variations: Clear, Black, and Wired. The wired glass option is noted for its distinctive visual texture and is highlighted as a particularly appealing choice, contributing an industrial yet refined element to the overall design. This variety in glass tops allows for different levels of transparency and visual interest, enabling consumers to tailor the table to their specific design needs and personal tastes.
The price point for the new Occasional Tables ranges from $1,600 to $4,800, reflecting their status as designer furniture. This pricing positions the re-release as an accessible alternative to vintage versions of the table, which are currently being sold on secondary markets for significantly higher figures, often reaching into five digits. The reintroduction by Knoll therefore provides an opportunity for new generations of design enthusiasts to acquire a piece of design history, without the prohibitive cost associated with rare vintage items, making a classic design more attainable while preserving its original intent and quality.
