joris laarman bits and crafts: a digital fabrication exhibition at friedman benda

The Friedman Benda gallery is hosting 'Joris Laarman Lab: Bits and Crafts,' an exhibition by Dutch designer Joris Laarman. This exhibition explores the integration of digital fabrication and generative design tools into contemporary design practices. Laarman utilizes advanced tools such as CNC mills and 3D printers to push the boundaries of shape, fabrication methods, and material possibilities, creating a unique intersection of technology and traditional craftsmanship. The exhibition is structured around four main thematic explorations: 'maker furniture,' 'micro structures,' 'vortex,' and the 'spirographic series.' Laarman emphasizes that digital technology is revolutionizing how products are designed, manufactured, distributed, and even recycled. He draws a parallel to early 20th-century modernists who were influenced by emerging industrial manufacturing methods, suggesting that digital tools are now similarly reshaping design paradigms and encouraging artists to explore new possibilities within the digital revolution. He advocates for a symbiotic relationship between handcraft and advanced technologies like parametric design and digital fabrication. Laarman's work also revisits the historical discourse between ornament and functionality, and crafts versus industry. He posits that in an increasingly globalized and uniform world, ornament and mass customization are gaining importance. The 'vortex' pieces, for instance, are inspired by research on computational vortex methods, allowing users to customize the level of ornamentation in a design. The exhibition showcases how these digital algorithms can generate novel forms that balance both aesthetic appeal and practical function. The 'maker' pieces exemplify a sophisticated approach to modular design, constructed from numerous parametric components engineered to interlock precisely like a three-dimensional puzzle. This modularity allows for diverse material usage, including resin, solid woods, plastics, and metals, with varied triangular, hexagonal, figurative, and pixelated shapes tailored to specific strength and aesthetic requirements. This approach expands design freedom and enables the creation of complex geometries. The exhibition features the aluminum vortex bookshelf and console, which are manufactured using generative design tools and methods, leading to unique designs. A notable piece is the 12 x 8-foot 'dragon bench,' created by 3D printing small amounts of molten stainless steel in mid-air. This technique allows Laarman to essentially 'draw' intricate, intersecting lines in space. The forms generated for the dragon bench are based on non-repetitive parametric modules and algorithms, ensuring each generated shape is unique. Further demonstrating his commitment to accessible design, Laarman's lab intends to release digital blueprints for some of his creations online, making them available to a wider audience. The spirographic series, another highlight, was produced using the MX3D robotic 3D printer, developed by Joris Laarman Lab itself. The exhibition collectively illustrates a comprehensive vision for integrating cutting-edge digital tools and fabrication techniques with artistic expression and functional design, highlighting the potential for mass customization and innovative forms in contemporary furniture and object design. #DigitalFabrication #GenerativeDesign #3DPrinting #JorisLaarman #FriedmanBenda #ContemporaryDesign #ParametricDesign #Craftsmanship #TechnologicalInnovation #DigitalFabrication #GenerativeDesign #3DPrinting #JorisLaarman #FriedmanBenda #ContemporaryDesign #ParametricDesign #Craftsmanship #TechnologicalInnovation
