Interior expert Sophie Robinson reveals the trick to stop a feature wall from looking dull and dated

Feature walls, a popular design element used to introduce a wallpaper design without committing to covering an entire room, can sometimes appear dull or outdated if not executed correctly. Interior expert Sophie Robinson offers a method to ensure feature walls remain fresh and modern. Robinson, known for her expertise in color and interiors with 20 years of experience as an interior journalist, author, and presenter, emphasizes the importance of making a strong statement with a feature wall, especially for those who might be less daring with their wallpaper choices. While acknowledging that she herself often embraces color on all four walls, she supports the use of feature walls as an accessible entry point to bold design. The core of Robinson's advice revolves around opting for a mural instead of traditional repeat-patterned wallpaper for a feature wall. She explains that while conventional wallpaper features a regular, uniform repeat, murals distinguish themselves with less symmetry, a larger, more expansive design, and a unique, artistic quality. A mural, in essence, functions as a large piece of art scaled to cover an entire wall, providing a significant visual impact. Though murals can come in multiple rolls that require careful assembly, some designs are available as a single, cohesive piece. Robinson highlights the aesthetic and practical advantages of murals, noting that they often provide a greater return on investment compared to regular wallpaper. She suggests that murals are so impactful that they negate the need for additional artwork on the wall, effectively performing all the 'heavy lifting' in terms of decor. For instance, she mentions a woodland scene mural from her Harlequin collection, which she has applied to all four walls in her office, but acknowledges its effectiveness even on a single wall. Addressing the cost, Robinson concedes that murals typically command a higher price than standard wallpaper. However, she justifies this by their ability to act as a complete decorative solution, eliminating the need for further artistic embellishments. The pricing of murals can vary widely, with more affordable options available from retailers like Dunelm, starting around £40, while premium brands such as Graham and Brown offer selections beginning at £29.60 per square meter, with costs ultimately depending on the wall's size. Crucially, Robinson advises against painting the remaining walls white when incorporating a mural. Instead, she recommends selecting a paint shade directly from within the mural's color palette. This strategy ensures cohesion and prevents the feature wall from appearing isolated or out of place. She provides an example from her own home, where she used a pale sky blue from her office mural to paint the ceiling and an adjacent wall, thereby integrating the mural seamlessly into the room's overall design. This approach prevents the feature wall from feeling like a separate entity and creates a unified, well-thought-out space, achieving a stunning result by harmonizing all elements. #FeatureWall #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #Wallpaper #WallMural #SophieRobinson #ColorPalette #RoomRenovation #DesignTips #FeatureWall #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #Wallpaper #WallMural #SophieRobinson #ColorPalette #RoomRenovation #DesignTips
