I'm a landscaping expert advice - here's the five plants you NEED to keep pesky insects away this summer
As summer approaches and outdoor activities like BBQs and patio evenings become more frequent, the presence of insects such as mosquitoes and pollen beetles can be a significant nuisance. Traditional deterrents like yellow candles and repellent sprays often prove to be minimally effective and short-lived, with their fumes sometimes causing discomfort. Simon Wilkinson, MD of Wilkinson’s Landscapes, advocates for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly approach by utilizing specific plants known for their insect-repelling properties. This method not only addresses pest control but also enhances the aesthetic and aromatic qualities of a garden.
Wilkinson has identified five key plants that are particularly effective in deterring various insects. The first is Lavender, an aromatic herb known for its powerful fragrance that mosquitoes and moths dislike. Planting lavender can help keep these common pests at bay while adding a pleasant scent to the garden.
Next, Mint, including varieties like peppermint and spearmint, acts as a natural "bug kryptonite." Its refreshing scent is highly effective against ants, flies, and mosquitoes. However, Wilkinson advises growing mint in pots to control its rapid growth and prevent it from overtaking the garden space.
Basil is another herb recommended for its insect-repelling qualities. Beyond its culinary uses, basil emits a scent that mosquitoes and flies find intolerable. Ensuring basil plants receive ample sunlight and water will help maintain a bug-free outdoor area.
Rosemary bushes are also highlighted for their dual benefits. They add beauty to the garden and, thanks to their strong aroma and dense foliage, serve as a natural deterrent for mosquitoes and other pesky insects. This makes them a practical and visually appealing addition to any garden.
Finally, Geraniums are suggested for their stylish appearance and effectiveness against mosquitoes and flies. These flowers release a lemony fragrance that pests tend to avoid. Providing geraniums with sufficient sun and water will help create an attractive and insect-free outdoor oasis.
In addition to these plant-based solutions, Wilkinson provides further tips for general pest control. For instance, hornets and wasps are repelled by the smell of peppermint oil, which can be sprayed around patios and balconies. Acidic household white vinegar is effective in deterring moths when soaked into kitchen roll and placed in wardrobes. Flying ants can be kept away by various herbs and spices like cinnamon, mint, chili pepper, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cloves, or garlic. For mosquitoes, eucalyptus, lavender, and lemongrass essential oils are recommended. These natural methods offer practical ways to enjoy outdoor spaces without the irritation of common summer pests.
