I Designed a Living Room with IKEA's New AI Tool—Here Are My Thoughts

IKEA has introduced a new AI tool called Kreativ, designed to help users create furniture layouts and design schemes for their homes. This tool aims to provide a budget-friendly alternative to hiring an interior designer, allowing users to visualize and plan their spaces with ease. The article describes the author's personal experience using Kreativ to design two living rooms: one using preloaded IKEA designs and another using images of her own living room, which she is currently redecorating. The author found the tool user-friendly despite initial apprehension about using artificial intelligence. To begin, users need to download the IKEA app and create an account, which requires some personal information. Once set up, the app provides functionalities such as shopping, saving products, and filtering by room and style. One method of using Kreativ involves designing a showroom with preloaded images. Users can select from furnished showrooms created by IKEA designers or start with an empty room. Within these virtual spaces, furniture, accessories, and art can be added, rotated, and moved, and colors can be swapped to achieve a desired aesthetic. The tool also offers different perspectives, including a bird's-eye view and a "dollhouse" style, which the author likened to professional design software seen on HGTV. The premade showrooms offer inspiration, though not all items displayed are available for immediate purchase; typically, only main furniture pieces can be added to the shopping cart. Alternatively, users can start with a blank room and customize wall colors and layouts. The author describes adding a rug to a blank room and utilizing the tool's suggestions for complementary furniture. While she encountered minor glitches, such as the tool not suggesting a coffee table automatically, she found the overall results impressive, noting that she was able to create a cohesive and stylish living room. An innovative feature of Kreativ is the ability to upload images of one's own room to virtually experiment with IKEA designs. The app guides users through the process of taking photos, which are then analyzed to create three-dimensional representations of their space. Although users cannot rotate these uploaded rooms as freely as the preset ones, multiple views can be created by uploading several photos. The option to create an empty version of the space or selectively erase existing furniture allows for mixing new IKEA items with current pieces, which the author found particularly helpful for redecorating without a complete overhaul. She was able to experiment with different furniture arrangements and add accessories like oversized art and lamps, ultimately feeling satisfied with the virtual redesign of her living room. Overall, the author highlights several pros and cons of IKEA Kreativ. The advantages include its ease of use, intuitive interface, and accessibility as a free tool, making professional-level design mockups available without the cost of a designer. The budgeting feature, which tracks the total cost of items added, is also noted as a significant benefit. However, limitations exist, such as the restriction to IKEA-only products and the inability to purchase all accessories from predesigned showrooms directly. Occasional glitches, like accessories becoming invisible or leaving gaps when furniture is removed, were also mentioned. Despite these minor issues, the author concludes that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, recommending Kreativ as a fun and interactive way for design enthusiasts to experiment with home decor and discover their style, especially for those looking to redecorate on a budget. #IKEAKreativ #AIDesignTool #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #LivingRoomDesign #BudgetFriendlyDesign #VirtualRoomDesign #DIYDesign #SmartHome #IKEAKreativ #AIDesignTool #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #LivingRoomDesign #BudgetFriendlyDesign #VirtualRoomDesign #DIYDesign #SmartHome
