How They Pulled It Off: A One-Bedroom Penthouse That Transforms Into a Four-Bedroom Apartment

Shuji Suzumori of Suzumori Architecture designed a 2,400-square-foot penthouse duplex in New York City to address the challenges of hosting guests in a small space. The project transformed a one-bedroom penthouse into a flexible four-bedroom apartment through clever modular elements. The design allows the homeowners to comfortably live as two people while easily accommodating children, grandchildren, and other guests without sacrificing privacy or intimacy. The core of the design revolves around transformable spaces that can be reconfigured as needed. Key modular elements incorporated into the penthouse include a breakfast nook that converts into a private sleeping area with a pocket door and pullout bench. Additionally, a louvered staircase can be elegantly manipulated to create another private room, complete with a hidden Murphy bed. The library, typically a serene reading room, can transform into a guest suite. This transformation involves converting a conversation pit into a sleeping platform and revealing a hidden shower stall. This guest suite, which also features a full bath and minibar, provides direct access to a shared roof deck, making it suitable for visiting family or a temporary workspace. Tim Moss of Think Construction, the general contractor for the project, collaborated closely with Suzumori to execute this architectural vision. The design emphasizes natural elements and intuitive hardware. Materials like solid white oak floors and solid brass hardware were chosen to reflect the building's prewar history and to age gracefully. Modular elements, such as door pulls and latches, were designed to be visible and intuitive, ensuring that guests could easily reconfigure spaces without confusion. For example, the desk integrated into the Murphy bed folds up seamlessly, and the pull on the sliding door clearly indicates its function. Japanese design principles significantly influenced the project, particularly in the staircase design. The original steel utility staircase was re-envisioned with Japanese-inspired louvers. These louvers, made of rift-cut white oak stained to match the home's other woodwork, allow the space to be private or shared depending on their orientation. Hidden tracks were developed to facilitate the smooth operation of these louvers. Other Japanese-influenced details, such as Japanese plaster walls, further integrate this aesthetic throughout the home. Emphasis was also placed on maximizing light and air within the penthouse. The existing cross-ventilation and natural light from multiple directions were enhanced with aluminum-clad, double-hung wood windows, which also improved energy efficiency. The louvered staircase contributes to this focus on light and air; when the two layers of tapered louvers are aligned, gaps allow light to filter into the shared living space. When offset, they form a functional wall, creating a private room. The homeowners expressed high satisfaction with their living space, frequently utilizing the transformable features to accommodate various family gatherings and holidays. #ModularDesign #PenthouseApartment #SpaceSavingSolutions #FlexibleLiving #TransformableFurniture #JapaneseArchitecture #InteriorDesign #ArchitecturalInnovation #ModularDesign #PenthouseApartment #SpaceSavingSolutions #FlexibleLiving #TransformableFurniture #JapaneseArchitecture #InteriorDesign #ArchitecturalInnovation
