How rethinking job titles improved this design company’s talent pool

Modsy, an interior design service, has strategically chosen to employ 'stylists' rather than 'interior designers,' a decision that has significantly broadened its talent pool. The company's unique approach allows individuals with diverse creative backgrounds, including degrees in interior design, architecture, art history, or graphic design, to apply, attracting both recent graduates and those with limited prior experience in traditional interior design roles. This strategy is particularly notable given the company's reliance on proprietary 3-D technology for remote work. To ensure high standards of quality and client satisfaction, Modsy has implemented a rigorous multi-level test and certification system for all prospective stylists. The initial stage involves a design test where candidates use Modsy's 3-D software to style a room within an hour, with their performance evaluated on taste, styling ability, and artistic skill. Successful candidates then proceed to a certification process, which includes a series of lessons and design prompts reviewed by style leads. The final stage of certification is a comprehensive three-part test that presents varied 'customer' prompts, assessed based on the candidate's ability to create cohesive and aesthetically pleasing spaces while fully addressing customer needs. Upon passing this test, stylists are admitted to the Modsy Style Network, which comprises nearly 100 individuals. Continuous quality assurance is maintained through regular styling reviews by managers for new employees and periodic performance audits for all stylists throughout their tenure. This ensures that Modsy's high standards are consistently met. Founded in 2015 by Shanna Tellerman, who has a background in 3-D design and commerce, Modsy provides 3-D renderings of room designs with unlimited revisions. Clients can engage with individual stylists or the design team remotely, and all furniture and decor items can be purchased directly through the platform. The success of this model is evidenced by Modsy's significant funding, totaling $33.8 million across three rounds, and its partnerships with notable brands like Crate & Barrel and _Architectural Digest_'s millennial-focused content channel, Clever. The decision to use the title 'stylist' instead of 'designer' was deliberate, aimed at fostering a more inclusive hiring environment. Alessandra Wood, Modsy's director of style, emphasizes that this approach allows the company to recruit creative individuals who may not have followed conventional interior design career paths, citing industry figures like Kelly Wearstler as examples of successful creatives who did not adhere to traditional trajectories. Research from Indeed supports the effectiveness of more general job titles in attracting a larger and potentially more qualified applicant pool. Employees like Cassie Thibault, a certification reviewer, and Jenni Marko, a stylist, have expressed positive sentiments about Modsy's innovative hiring practices and supportive company culture. Thibault notes that Modsy provided her with an opportunity to begin her design career when other avenues were closed, while Marko highlights the company's family-like culture and the encouragement for employees to contribute ideas for improving both employee and customer experiences. This innovative approach to talent acquisition and development has not only expanded Modsy's talent pool but also cultivated a positive and engaging work environment. #JobTitles #TalentAcquisition #InteriorDesign #RemoteWork #3DTechnology #CreativeHiring #EmployeeExperience #Modsy #DesignIndustry #JobTitles #TalentAcquisition #InteriorDesign #RemoteWork #3DTechnology #CreativeHiring #EmployeeExperience #Modsy #DesignIndustry
