How I Organized One of the Trickiest Spots in Our Home—The Kids’ Closets!

The author embarked on a project to organize her children's closets, a task she had been postponing due to their disarray. These spaces, belonging to her elementary school-aged children, Phoebe and Henry, had become a source of stress and clutter. The objective of the renovation was to create highly functional and stress-free environments that would simplify morning routines and evening wind-downs, while also fostering independence in her children. She collaborated with California Closets, opting for their adaptable and modular “The Everyday System.” This system was chosen for its flexibility to accommodate the children's growth and changing needs, unlike the previous built-ins that proved to be less versatile. The author emphasizes that a key design element in her organizational projects is the inclusion of numerous drawers. She notes that shallow drawers, when used for neatly folded clothing, significantly contribute to maintaining tidiness and ease of access. Open shelving was incorporated to store books, toys, and various items in bins and baskets. This strategy helps manage the accumulation of toys and stuffed animals, preventing clutter from spreading into the children’s rooms. The design also utilized upper storage spaces effectively, designating them for out-of-season clothing, extra bedding, and bulky items like sleeping bags. In Phoebe’s closet, a stool was added to allow her access to these higher shelves and rods, further promoting self-sufficiency. The author paid particular attention to accessorizing with textural bins and baskets, not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for their functional role in organizing small items such as notes, tiny earrings, necklaces, and doll accessories. This ensures that every item has a designated place, simplifying daily clean-up routines. Henry's closet, a small walk-in with an awkward layout, presented a unique challenge. The modular system from California Closets was instrumental in maximizing every inch of space, making the closet feel larger and more functional. A crucial step in organizing small closets, whether for children or adults, is regular purging of outgrown or out-of-season items. The modular system supports this by providing adaptable storage for shoes, hats, toys, and accessories, with adjustable hanging space and drawers tailored to specific needs. To ensure the organization is sustainable and easy for children to maintain, the design included practical solutions. Hooks were installed in both closets for hanging bags, jackets, and hats, allowing for quick storage and preventing items from ending up on the floor. Large open baskets were provided for dirty laundry, offering a simple catch-all solution. Keeping frequently used items at arm's length in plain view aligns with a 'grab-and-go' lifestyle and encourages children to return items to their proper places at the end of the day. The article underscores the transformative impact of these organizational strategies, turning previously chaotic spaces into areas that bring a sense of calm and joy. #KidsClosetIdeas #HomeOrganization #CaliforniaClosets #ModularStorage #StressFreeMornings #DeclutteringTips #HomeDesign #ParentingTips #FunctionalSpaces #KidsClosetIdeas #HomeOrganization #CaliforniaClosets #ModularStorage #StressFreeMornings #DeclutteringTips #HomeDesign #ParentingTips #FunctionalSpaces
