How To Organize Your Messy, Crowded Closet
This article highlights the transformation of Fiona Byrne's small walk-in closet in her Lower East Side apartment, demonstrating how professional organization can maximize space and functionality without extensive purging. Byrne, founder of The Byrne Notice and editor-at-large for The Debrief, had lived in her apartment for a decade, leading to an overwhelming and messy closet despite her self-professed OCD tendencies. To address this, she enlisted the services of Contained Home, The Container Store's organizational arm.
The primary challenge presented to Contained Home was Byrne's reluctance to part with many of her clothes and accessories, as she frequently wears and loves all her pieces. The solution devised focused on optimizing vertical space and strategically placing items for easy access. The article illustrates a series of before-and-after scenarios within the closet, showcasing specific organizational tricks that readers can adapt for their own wardrobes, regardless of size.
Before the makeover, the closet suffered from cramped conditions. Shoes were scattered across the floor, existing shelves were inadequate for heels, and hot-pink hangers contributed to a visually unappealing environment. A hanging pouch served as a disorganized dumping ground for unused items, while a spiked jewelry wall, though initially 'cool,' had become cluttered, making it difficult to find specific pieces. The central hanging area was so packed that the entire space felt suffocating and claustrophobic.
After the professional intervention, the closet underwent a dramatic improvement. The 'after' photos reveal how the space was utilized to its full ceiling height, with floating shelves installed to store items at higher levels. A small step stool was acquired to ensure accessibility to these elevated items. The wall was transformed into an attractive display for Byrne's bag collection, ingeniously using repurposed kitchen trays as containers. Footwear, previously on the floor, was now neatly hung on the wall, making sneakers and heels much easier to locate. Pull-out shelves were incorporated to enhance accessibility and organization.
Simple yet effective changes were also implemented to improve visual harmony and efficiency. Replacing plastic hangers with uniform ones created a more cohesive look, and color-coding clothes further contributed to visual peace. By repositioning hanging items like jeans and shirts to the sides and corners, the bulk factor was significantly reduced. Two bins were placed above these hanging items to store seasonal pieces, keeping them accessible when needed. Daily essentials and lingerie were arranged front and center for immediate reach. Sunglasses were given their own dedicated shelf above the storage bins. The previously cluttered jewelry wall was replaced with a multi-layered felt case, providing organized and convenient storage for bracelets and earrings. Finally, hatboxes were strategically placed on the ground to prevent stray shoes from accumulating and cluttering the floor space. These transformations collectively demonstrate a highly functional and aesthetically pleasing organizational system designed to maximize a small closet's potential.
