Hate your cramped kitchen? Local designer shares creative ways to add more storage space

Margarita Panchenko, a designer at Harrell Design + Build, emphasizes that kitchen design should prioritize the homeowner's lifestyle over resale value. She advocates for creative, organized storage solutions to make kitchens functional and enjoyable. Panchenko frequently asks clients about their frustrations with their current kitchens to tailor designs effectively. The article provides several innovative ideas to maximize storage and efficiency, moving beyond standard cabinet layouts. One key recommendation is to optimize storage around frequently used areas, such as the cooktop. Instead of placing cooking oils and utensils in disparate, hard-to-reach locations, Panchenko suggests flanking the cooktop with drawers of varying depths. Shallow drawers can hold commonly used spatulas and tongs, while deeper ones can store oils, vinegars, and non-perishable sauces. Dedicated spice drawers near the cooking area minimize the need to search through multiple cabinets. Other practical storage solutions include built-in knife blocks, dispensers for plastic wrap and foil, hidden paper-towel spools, rollouts for recycling and compost, docking drawers for recharging devices, dish drawer pegs, and 'magic' corners for blind cabinet spaces. To keep countertops clear, appliance lifts and appliance garages are highlighted as effective solutions. Appliance lifts are ideal for heavy items like stand mixers, allowing them to be stored in a base cabinet and lifted to counter height when needed. Appliance garages provide a concealed space for frequently used devices such as toasters, coffee makers, and air fryers. These garages often include electrical outlets and doors that can be opened, rolled up, or retracted to blend seamlessly with cabinetry when not in use. This approach helps maintain a tidy and uncluttered look in the kitchen. For smaller kitchens, a pantry cabinet can be re-imagined as an 'as-needed' countertop. This involves installing a flat, sturdy, sideless surface that can extend out several feet from the pantry, creating a temporary workspace. Panchenko suggests using pocket-style pantry doors that retract into the cabinet for an unobstructed work area, or bifold doors for shallower pantries. Making the interior of these cabinets visually appealing and adding electrical outlets further enhances their utility, providing a versatile space for tasks like mixing drinks or food preparation when the main countertop is occupied. Microwave placement is another area for thoughtful design. To avoid cluttering countertops or placing them in inconvenient locations like above the range, where steam and heat can reduce their lifespan, various concealment options are suggested. These include installing built-in microwave drawers under the counter, placing them on freestanding open shelves within cabinets, or tucking them away in built-in pantries. This ensures accessibility while keeping the appliance out of sight. Bakeware storage can be improved with tall, narrow pullout cabinets located near the oven or range. These units offer multiple shelves for organizing pots, pans, baking tins, and colanders, making items easy to see and retrieve without rummaging through stacks. For those preferring deep drawers under the cooktop, adding a shallow drawer specifically for cookware lids helps maintain order. Pullout pantries, particularly next to the stove or oven, provide quick access to dry goods like pasta, grains, and canned items. Roll-out drawers offer clear visibility of ingredients, and these pantries can be segmented for specific storage needs. A tall pantry cabinet with multiple doors, each containing a combination of drawers and shelves, creates intentional organization. Additionally, secret walk-in or butler's pantries, concealed behind a door or paneling, offer a fun and effective way to hide stored goods. Open shelving serves as an artistic and convenient storage option for dishes and glassware, enhancing the visual appeal of the kitchen. This can be particularly effective around sinks or interspersed with traditional cabinetry and in walk-in pantries. Thick, sturdy, and easy-to-clean shelves, often accompanied by recessed or built-in lighting, can showcase attractive kitchen items. Finally, kitchen islands offer versatile opportunities for creative functionality. They can be extended to create informal eating areas, curved for unique designs, or feature 'waterfall' edges for support. Dropping the island's height can transform it into a dining table. For wine enthusiasts with limited space, the vertical area beneath an island or peninsula can be utilized for an artsy wine rack, displaying bottles horizontally with pegs. #KitchenDesign #HomeImprovement #StorageSolutions #InteriorDesign #PantryOrganization #ApplianceStorage #CountertopManagement #SpaceSaving #HarrellDesignBuild #KitchenDesign #HomeImprovement #StorageSolutions #InteriorDesign #PantryOrganization #ApplianceStorage #CountertopManagement #SpaceSaving #HarrellDesignBuild
