This product maintains the camera capabilities of its battery-powered counterpart, which include excellent image quality, accurate activity-sensing features, and robust durability. The camera can detect general motion and utilizes AI to identify specific objects such as animals, vehicles, and people. With a Nest Aware subscription, it can further distinguish individual people and retain footage for longer than three hours. The primary focus of this review, however, is on the unique aspects of this variation, particularly the dual LED floodlights and the installation process. The floodlights are a significant feature, boasting 2,400 lumens, making them exceptionally bright for a smart floodlight system. They are easily adjustable within the Google Home app, allowing users to control brightness, turn-on/off schedules, and integrate them into Google Assistant routines. Physical adjustments to both the lights and the camera are tool-free and straightforward. The system also includes a traditional motion sensor that is highly sensitive and effective. An advantageous feature is the camera's ability to control the lights, enabling selective activation based on detected objects, such as turning on for a person but not for an animal. This functionality is particularly useful as the bright floodlights eliminate the need for the camera's somewhat subpar black-and-white night vision. Despite its strengths, the Google Nest Cam with Floodlight presents several drawbacks. Installation is complex, requiring connection to an existing floodlight junction box, and is not a simple DIY task for those unfamiliar with electrical work. While the camera has a built-in battery for power outages, the floodlights do not utilize this battery, limiting their functionality during such events.
