Geometric Wood Veneers by Front for ALPI
ALPI, a company renowned for its decorative wood veneers, partnered with the Swedish design duo Front to introduce two innovative designs: Drapery Wood and Grid Wood. These creations, part of ALPI's Designer Collections, represent a contemporary interpretation of traditional inlay techniques and wood veneers, updating a centuries-old craft with modern aesthetics. The collaboration focuses on pushing the boundaries of wood surfacing, offering new possibilities for interior applications and architectural elements.
Drapery Wood is a distinctive two-tone veneer characterized by alternating strips of squares that are subtly offset. This careful arrangement creates an optical illusion of flowing, wave-like motion, reminiscent of draped fabric. The design introduces a dynamic and soft visual texture to wood, diverging from typical flat wood surfaces. The interplay of light and shadow on the slightly raised and recessed sections of the veneer enhances this effect, providing depth and visual interest to any surface it adorns. This veneer is suitable for applications where a sense of movement and textile-like softness is desired, offering a sophisticated alternative to conventional wood finishes.
Grid Wood draws its inspiration from traditional reticular structures, evoking the imagery of a gridded roof on a pergola. This design incorporates four different types of wood, each chosen for its unique color and grain, to create a complex inlay pattern. The combination of these varied wood elements results in a striking three-dimensional illusion, adding significant depth and intricate detail to the surface. The meticulous arrangement of the different wood types creates a perception of architectural framework and volumetric forms, transforming a flat panel into a visually rich and textured composition. Grid Wood offers a strong architectural statement, ideal for spaces that aim to integrate structural aesthetics with natural materials.
Both Drapery Wood and Grid Wood demonstrate a fusion of innovative design and expert craftsmanship, expanding the creative potential of wood veneers. Front's designs for ALPI emphasize visual texture, optical illusions, and the inherent beauty of wood, while also leveraging modern manufacturing techniques to achieve these intricate patterns. These veneers are not merely surface coverings but design statements that can define the character of an interior space. The partnership highlights ALPI's commitment to collaborating with leading designers to develop cutting-edge products that maintain a connection to the rich history of woodworking. Federico Cedrone provided the photographic documentation for these designs, capturing the intricate details and visual impact of the new veneers.
