Expert-tested mould removal tips that actually work
Mould and mildew are common household issues that, despite their natural occurrences in various forms, can pose significant problems when found growing in homes. While certain molds contribute to beneficial processes like cheesemaking or medicine production, their presence in living spaces can lead to unsightly stains, musty odors, and health issues such as allergies and flu-like symptoms. Professor Dee Carter, a microbiologist and fungi expert from the University of Sydney, emphasizes that any visible mould is a potential concern, and a noticeable mould smell indicates levels that may be hazardous.
The key to managing mould effectively lies in both prevention and proper removal. Prevention primarily involves controlling moisture and ensuring adequate ventilation within the home. Penny Tralau of Mould Rescue, a professional mould removal service, highlights that moisture is the primary factor contributing to mould growth. This includes fixing leaky pipes, dripping taps, roof leaks, and foundation cracks. In cases of water damage, materials should be thoroughly dried, or discarded if mould has already established itself significantly. Good ventilation is crucial; a dry and well-ventilated home will naturally deter mould growth. This can be achieved by increasing air circulation in rooms like kitchens and bathrooms, dealing with dampness promptly, and considering the use of air purifiers or dehumidifiers.
Mould can appear on almost any surface at any time of the year, thriving in damp, warm, or humid conditions. It typically manifests as black, brown, or green spots. Mildew, a type of mould, often presents as a fuzzy white growth, particularly in poorly ventilated and damp bathrooms. Common areas to check for mould include walls and ceilings, especially behind furniture, as well as air-conditioners and heating ducts. Bathrooms, kitchens, fridges, wardrobes, and laundries are also frequent targets. In bathrooms, daily habits such as drying surfaces, hanging towels to dry, and using heated towel rails or dehumidifiers can help. In kitchens, using exhaust fans during cooking, drying sinks and dish racks, and regularly cleaning dishwashers (including seals and filters) are effective measures. For fridges, disposing of old food and regular cleaning prevent mould. Wardrobes benefit from being decluttered, storing only dry clothing, and using dehumidifiers or moisture absorbers. In laundries, exhaust fans should be used when drying clothes, and washing machines should be wiped down after use, with doors and soap compartments left ajar for front-loaders.
When it comes to removal, vinegar is highly recommended over bleach by experts like Professor Carter. Vinegar effectively kills mould on contact and penetrates surfaces, eliminating both visible mould and underlying growth. It is also safe for use in kitchens, generally does not stain, and is more cost-effective than many commercial products whose efficacy can diminish over time. Essential oils like tea tree, eucalyptus, and clove are also noted for their mould-killing properties. For cleaning soft surfaces affected by mildew, washing them with white vinegar in the rinse cycle and air-drying is advised. For hard surfaces like tiles or grout, a solution of 1 part vinegar to 20 parts water can be sprayed and left for 10-20 minutes. If mould covers a large area (around 1 square meter) or if residents have asthma, professional mould removal services are recommended. Protective gear, including gloves and a mask, should always be worn when cleaning mould. Products like Cornwell’s white vinegar, clove bud essential oil, and Ajax Professional mould remover are suggested for DIY mould treatment.
