European Kitchen Design Trends to Know for 2019
The article explores prevailing European kitchen design trends for 2019, distinguishing them from prevalent styles in the U.S. and offering inspiration for homeowners considering renovation. It highlights the European approach to design, which often integrates historic architecture with contemporary elements, creating a fresh yet nostalgic aesthetic. Kitchens, being central to European homes, receive significant design attention, moving away from the 'whitewashed kitchen trend' often seen in the U.S.
Two industry experts, Laura Calimano, product designer and trend analyst for Cosentino, and Valentina Bertazzoni, head of style and brand for Bertazzoni, provide insights into these trends. Their observations, gathered from factory visits in Spain and Italy, pinpoint several key design directions for the year.
One significant trend is the dominance of matte finishes. This applies to worktops, cabinets, and countertops, offering a cooler and more modern look than glossy alternatives. Matte black, in particular, is noted for its popularity, providing a neutral yet bold and chic design statement. Incorporating matte black can extend beyond appliances to cabinets and backsplashes, with black hardware offering a subtler way to adopt the trend. However, considerations regarding natural and overhead lighting are crucial when integrating dark elements.
Natural materials are also gaining prominence. Raw materials such as concrete, wood, and iron contribute an industrial-meets-rustic elegance. The Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi is cited as an influence, encouraging the use of elements that promote meditation, serenity, and calmness, and celebrating organic imperfections, craftsmanship, and authentic materials that age gracefully. Merlin Wright of Plain English emphasizes the practicality of natural materials, noting their longevity and repairability compared to plastics and sprayed finishes. Examples include Cosentino's Dekton Natural Collection or the addition of wooden open shelving.
Another trend involves the strategic use of bright colors. Rather than painting entire surfaces, Europeans tend to introduce pops of color through appliances or smaller decorative items. This approach allows for personalization and individuality within the space. While European homeowners have traditionally been bolder with color, U.S. consumers are also showing increased interest in saturated accents. Options range from statement-making colored ranges to smaller appliances like toasters or blenders, and artwork.
The concept of 'mix and match' design is also prevalent. This approach embraces eclectic juxtapositions, allowing for the combination of diverse styles, such as concrete-inspired materials with bold color accents, minimalistic cabinets with contrasting countertops, or neutral walls with metallic touches. This trend encourages a more carefree and unconventional approach to interior design.
Dark wood is making a comeback, diverging from the lighter decor schemes often favored in the U.S. While dark woods can make a space feel heavier, modern applications balance this by incorporating elements like open shelving instead of closed cabinetry to create a sense of spaciousness. Sleek cabinets and minimalist silhouettes are used to contemporize the heavy shade of antique wood styles.
Finally, worktables are presented as an alternative to traditional kitchen islands, particularly beneficial for smaller spaces or rentals. With distinct legs and visible space underneath, worktables offer a lighter feel than floor-fitted cupboards and are a more budget-friendly option for kitchen updates. Examples include the Brooklyn Kitchen Cart from Pottery Barn.
