Designers Agree: This Outdated Cabinet Trend Is Making a Major Kitchen Comeback in 2026

Honey oak, once considered an outdated element of kitchen design, is experiencing a significant resurgence in popularity for 2026, according to interior design experts. Designers and homeowners are now embracing honey oak for its cozy and nostalgic appeal, but with a modern twist. The updated approach to honey oak involves matte or satin finishes, moving away from the glossy appearance of past decades, which elevates its aesthetic. This renewed interest is driven by a desire for warmth and character in home interiors, a shift from the prevalence of white tones that have dominated kitchens in recent years. Experts such as Lisbeth Parada, a designer and Color Marketing Manager at Minwax, highlight that today's honey oak feels more refined and sophisticated. Peggy Haddad, founder of Peggy Haddad Interiors, notes that warmer oaks are making a comeback, particularly those where the wood grain is visible and the tone evokes a sun-warmed feeling. She advocates for using honey oak in moderation and prefers a matte finish to achieve a look that adds instant warmth and vintage charm to a space. Beyond aesthetics, the material's inherent durability is a key factor in its renewed appeal. Rebecca Mahoney, principal designer at Robinwood Kitchens, emphasizes oak's versatility, distinctive grain pattern, and exceptional ability to withstand daily wear and tear, making it a long-lasting and timeless choice for various applications. While honey oak cabinets are a natural fit for kitchens and bathrooms, designers are expanding its application to other areas of the home. It is being incorporated into living rooms, dining areas, and even bedrooms through elements like built-in shelving, bar cabinetry, and media centers. These additions, rendered in warm oak tones, contribute to an immediate sense of warmth within a room. For those not ready to undertake extensive cabinetry overhauls, smaller updates can introduce the honey oak trend. Refinishing vintage furniture pieces such as dressers, sideboards, or consoles in a honey tone is suggested as an accessible way to integrate this golden glow into home decor. Another creative solution involves using honey oak paneling for an accent wall, adding textural interest to any room. For homeowners who already possess older honey oak cabinets, updating hardware, lighting, and countertops can modernize the existing features, making them feel intentional and current rather than dated. In addition to honey oak, other trending cabinet colors are emerging as alternatives for those seeking similar warm aesthetics without committing to wood. Mushroom and creamy off-white tones are gaining traction, offering a softer, modern refresh with warm undertones. Furthermore, earthy tones and rich browns are expected to become prominent choices in kitchen designs, signifying a broader shift in neutral palettes from stark whites to more softened, creamy, and muted shades. These evolving trends reflect a collective move towards creating more inviting, durable, and character-filled living spaces. #KitchenTrends #HomeDecor #CabinetDesign #InteriorDesign #HoneyOak #DesignRevival #WarmTones #MaterialDurability #VintageCharm #KitchenTrends #HomeDecor #CabinetDesign #InteriorDesign #HoneyOak #DesignRevival #WarmTones #MaterialDurability #VintageCharm
