Brush Up Your Trim Game With These Top Paint Brushes

Selecting the right paintbrush for trim work is crucial for achieving professional-looking results. Angled brushes, also known as sash brushes, are generally preferred for trim due to their ability to offer precise control around corners and edges, as highlighted by Ryan Parr, owner of Nashville Painting Professionals. The ideal size for most trim projects is a 2-inch brush, balancing good coverage with maneuverability, though smaller brushes suit very narrow trim and larger ones are better for wider pieces like baseboards. Brush bristles are categorized into natural and synthetic types, each suited for different paint types and surfaces. Synthetic bristles, often a blend of polyester and nylon, are versatile and work well with most paints, especially latex, providing a smooth finish. Natural bristles, typically animal hair, excel with oil-based paints, stains, and varnishes, laying down a smooth coat but are best for smooth surfaces. Chinex bristles, a synthetic alternative, mimic natural bristles and are durable enough for rough surfaces and both oil-based and latex paints. Nylon bristles are soft, making them excellent for achieving a smooth finish with high-gloss or semi-gloss paints, which are prone to showing brushstrokes, but are generally for interior use. Polyester bristles are stiffer, hold a lot of paint, and perform well on abrasive surfaces with latex and water-based products, indoors or out. Polyester/nylon blends are a popular all-purpose choice, balancing softness and stiffness for good paint retention and smooth application on various surfaces. Handle comfort and length also play a significant role in control. Most trim brushes feature wood handles, but some innovative designs, like the Richard Goose Neck brush, offer flexible rubber handles or attachment points for extension poles, beneficial for reaching high areas like crown molding without a ladder. Shorter handles are ideal for tight, awkward spaces, while standard 5-to-8-inch handles provide comfortable control for general use. Handle shapes vary between "rattail" (thin and straight for precision) and "fluted" (wider and curved for better grip on larger surfaces). When making a selection, consider the type of paint. For latex or water-based products, a polyester/nylon blend is often the best and most cost-effective choice. For oil-based paints or varnishes, Chinex or natural bristle brushes are more appropriate. Marc Sieber of Wow 1 Day Painting notes that smaller brushes are vital for intricate trim, while slightly larger ones efficiently cover wider trim and ceiling lines. Regardless of the brush chosen, proper cleaning immediately after use is paramount to extending its lifespan and maintaining performance. For water-based paints, rinsing with warm water and using a brush comb suffices, while oil-based paints require a solvent. Reshaping bristles and allowing them to dry completely before storage, ideally in original packaging, helps preserve their condition for future projects. Several top picks cater to specific needs. The Purdy XL Glide Angle Paint Brush is lauded as the best overall for its versatility and comfort. For value, the Bates 6-Pack Paint Brushes offer a range of sizes at a low cost. The Purdy Nylox Glide Angle Paint Brush is recommended for gloss finishes due to its soft nylon bristles, while the Wooster Shortcut Angled Brush is ideal for tight spaces with its short rubber handle. For clean lines, the Wooster Pro Nylon/Polyester Sash Brush with its stiff bristles is a strong contender. The Wooster Pro 100% Nylon Paint Brush ensures a smooth finish on delicate surfaces, and the Purdy Pro Extra Glide Angle Brush is built for rough surfaces. The unique Richard Goose Neck Paint Brush excels for crown molding, and the Bates Trim Brush is perfect for detailed work. Lastly, the Purdy White Bristle Paint Brush stands out for oil-based paints with its natural animal hair bristles. #PaintBrushes #TrimPainting #HomeImprovement #DIYPainting #PaintingTools #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #BristleTypes #PaintApplication #PaintBrushes #TrimPainting #HomeImprovement #DIYPainting #PaintingTools #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #BristleTypes #PaintApplication
