Bobby Berk’s Tips to Change up Your Décor
Bobby Berk, a well-known designer, retailer, stylist, and trendsetter, has transitioned his West Coast-based design firm into an Interiors + Design division. This new division offers full-service interior design for residential, commercial, and hospitality projects. Berk has also partnered with various brands like Surya, Tempaper, Coastal Shower Doors, and Tilebar, and his work is now available through Art.com. With extensive experience in design, product development, and retail, Berk offers valuable insights into current trends and practical tips for refreshing living spaces without extensive renovations.
One of Berk’s key recommendations is the strategic use of textural accent walls. He highlights Stikwood, a product available in multiple finishes, as an effective way to introduce warmth, depth, and texture to a room. Stikwood can be integrated into various design styles, from modern to traditional, and is noted for its ease of installation and affordability. Examples include using weathered barn wood Stikwood in a master bedroom to create a significant visual impact and a contemporary Walnut Stikwood finish in an office space to prevent it from feeling sterile. Additionally, Berk suggests Inhabit wall flats, which come in diverse patterns and styles, as another cost-effective and easy-to-install option for adding texture. He cites an example where Braille flats were used in a living room for a textural upgrade from a simple painted accent wall, and faux brick panels were utilized in a bedroom to introduce architectural interest.
Berk also emphasizes the power of statement wall decor to invigorate neutral contemporary spaces. He recommends selecting impactful art pieces, such as those found on Art.com, to prevent minimalist schemes from appearing bland. For instance, a framed canvas piece from Art.com can enhance a simple dining room, while graphic circular art on plexi in an entry foyer can draw the eye upwards and set a modern, art-gallery-like tone for a home. His own licensed art collection was featured in the dining room of the Design Milk Sponsored Modernism Show House, demonstrating the personal touch statement art can bring.
For kitchen remodels, Berk advocates for “split finish” or “two-toned” cabinetry. This trend allows for greater design impact by mixing different finishes or materials for various cabinet sections, such as kitchen islands or upper and lower cabinets. He provides examples from his projects, including a contemporary kitchen that combined three finishes—white, gray, and maple for open shelving—to create a unique look without a high cost, and a Mid-Century inspired kitchen featuring green upper cabinets with walnut lowers. Another kitchen showcased a popular maple and walnut mix, illustrating the versatility of this approach.
Creating a luxurious bathroom can be achieved by pairing brass accents with trendy graphic cement tiles. Berk explains that rich brass hardware, fixtures, and lighting, especially when contrasted with black elements, can imbue a bathroom with an expensive feel without requiring costly materials. An example includes a bathroom design with white Daltile 6x6 tiles, white grout, and black walls, where the focal point is a graphic cement tile from the Pacific Collection by Cement Tile Shop on the floor. He also demonstrates how using graphic cement tiles as backsplashes, along with brass and black accents, can elevate a secondary bathroom even when standard fiberglass shower enclosures are used.
Finally, Berk suggests using subtle washed wallpaper to introduce print, pattern, and vibrancy into a space. He highlights his new collection with Tempaper, mentioning the "Lines Washed on White" print as a perfect complement to modern interiors. Another example features John Colaneri of HGTV using Berk's "Connect Washed on white" wallpaper with wire prism accents to create a graphic 3D effect against the light pattern, showcasing the versatility of wallpaper in enhancing interior aesthetics.
