A Tile Collection That Takes on Architecture’s Oldest Embellishments
KAZA Concrete has unveiled its latest tile collection, “Flutes and Reeds,” designed by GRT Architects. This collection reinterprets ancient architectural embellishments, specifically the fluting and reeding patterns commonly found on columns, pilasters, and walls in classical Greek architecture, by transforming them into modern, modular concrete tiles.
The collection comprises four distinct tile designs: Single Flute, Triple Flute, Single Reed, and Double Reed. Each design functions as a segment of a traditional fluted or reeded column, offering versatility in arrangement. When these tiles are installed in a conventional linear fashion, they evoke the classic, repeating patterns, albeit with a contemporary geometric subtlety. However, the true innovation lies in the ability to rotate and reconfigure these modular pieces. This flexibility allows for the creation of new, intricate patterns that balance both established order and dynamic complexity, while still maintaining a sense of familiarity derived from their historical inspiration.
GRT Architects' design for KAZA Concrete bridges the gap between historical architectural elements and modern interior design. The use of concrete as the primary material gives the tiles a tactile and robust quality, while the three-dimensional fluted and reeded surfaces introduce depth and shadow play to any wall or surface they adorn. This makes the collection suitable for a wide range of applications, from residential interiors to commercial spaces, where designers might seek to add a sophisticated, textural dimension.
By offering various arrangement possibilities, the “Flutes and Reeds” collection empowers designers and homeowners to customize surfaces, moving beyond simple repetitive patterns to create bespoke, architectural statements. The designs encourage experimentation with orientation, allowing for the generation of unique visual effects that can dramatically alter the perception of a space. This collection demonstrates a thoughtful approach to material design, combining historical reverence with contemporary modularity, and positioning concrete tiles as a medium for artistic expression in interior and exterior environments.
