7 Home Decor Trends to Look for in 2023 According to Interior Designers

The article outlines seven prominent home decor trends predicted for 2023, drawing insights from three interior designers in the DC area: Annie Elliott of Annie Elliott Design, Sara Swabb of Storie Collective, and Sydney Markus of Anthony Wilder Design/Build. These designers provide their perspectives on what will be popular in the upcoming year, moving away from past fads and embracing new aesthetics. One significant shift highlighted is the decline of light gray as a dominant neutral color. Annie Elliott suggests a move towards warmer hues such as warm whites, ivory, or camel to achieve a more inviting atmosphere. Alternatively, a trend towards "Dark Academia" is also noted, featuring moody colors like navy, green, and aubergine, often complemented by plaid fabrics or stained wood finishes, signaling a desire for richer, more evocative interiors. Natural woodgrain cabinetry is identified as another key trend. Sara Swabb emphasizes that true natural woodgrain offers a sophisticated statement without the dated appearance of 1970s aesthetics. While acknowledging the higher investment, she points out that using solid wood for cabinets results in superior quality and longevity compared to particle board or veneer, avoiding the less desirable look of faux-wood paneling. The concept of mixing old and new elements in decor is gaining traction, largely due to ongoing supply-chain challenges. Swabb advocates for incorporating antique and vintage finds with contemporary pieces. She particularly recommends starting with antique or vintage rugs, praising their durability, quality, and rich texture that often surpasses new options. Other vintage items suitable for integration include vases, planters, side tables, trays, and lighting fixtures, which can add character and depth to a space. Old-world materials such as limewash and plaster are experiencing a resurgence in popularity, driven by their aesthetic appeal on social media. Swabb advises introducing these textures in smaller areas like bathrooms or bedrooms initially before applying them to larger rooms. She also suggests pairing these materials with other natural elements like marble or wood to enhance their effect. Nature-inspired wallpaper is another trend identified by Sydney Markus. She observes a growing interest in wallpapers featuring motifs such as birds, flowers, vines, and leaves. Markus views these designs as creating a soothing, oasis-like environment, perfect for powder rooms, bedrooms, and offices. Nature-inspired murals are also recognized as a significant design element. Bouclé fabric is highlighted by Markus as a popular choice for adding depth and texture to interiors. She recommends its use on upholstered chairs and throw pillows, noting its ability to create a diverse and focal point in monochrome settings. However, a caution is issued regarding its durability, suggesting it is best avoided in high-traffic areas due to its delicate nature. Finally, high-gloss finishes are cited by Markus as a trend for elements like cabinets, built-in bookshelves, and bars. These finishes contribute to a moody yet warm ambiance. For a more dramatic, lacquered look, applying high-gloss finishes to all walls and ceilings in a room is suggested. Additionally, jewel-toned hardware is recommended to complement spaces with high-gloss surfaces, adding a touch of elegance and cohesion. #HomeDecorTrends #InteriorDesign #2023Trends #NeutralColors #NaturalWoodgrain #VintageDecor #LimewashPlaster #NatureInspiredWallpaper #BoucléFabric #HighGlossFinishes #HomeDecorTrends #InteriorDesign #2023Trends #NeutralColors #NaturalWoodgrain #VintageDecor #LimewashPlaster #NatureInspiredWallpaper #BoucléFabric #HighGlossFinishes
