7 Affordable Decor Ideas That Make Your Home Look Expensive, According to Designers

Decorating a home with a luxurious aesthetic often comes with a hefty price tag, but it is possible to achieve an expensive look without overspending. Interior designers Purvi Padia and Sarah Latham offer eight budget-friendly decor ideas that can elevate any living space. One effective method involves strategically placing throw blankets. According to Padia, a well-chosen throw blanket can instantly add texture and depth to a living room, making even an inexpensive sofa appear more sophisticated. This technique can also be applied to bedrooms by draping a throw blanket at the foot of the bed. Another key strategy is to accessorize tables, particularly coffee and dining tables. Padia suggests using a few carefully placed candle holders, a vase of fresh flowers on a stylish tray, or an oversized bowl as central elements. Fresh flowers purchased from supermarkets or farmers' markets offer an economical alternative to pricier arrangements. Experimenting with different shapes, objects, and textures for these accessories can enhance visual interest and cohesion. Layering decor is also highlighted as a way to create a luxurious feel. Instead of placing items directly on surfaces, designers recommend using intermediate layers, such as a chunky coffee table book under a vase or placemats and knotted textile napkins under dinner plates. Incorporating elements like flowers, branches, or even high-quality faux options can add additional layers, textures, height, and an overall sense of luxury. Framed art is identified as an inexpensive touch that significantly contributes to a room's character and taste. Sarah Latham emphasizes that expensive art is not necessary; personal photographs that are professionally framed and matted can achieve a similar sophisticated effect. Updating light fixtures is another impactful change. Replacing outdated fixtures, often referred to as “boob lights” or flush mounts, with bold designer-dupe fixtures can dramatically alter a room's appearance. Since light fixtures are not subject to significant wear and tear, material quality is less crucial than their aesthetic appeal. Similarly, upgrading hardware on furniture like desks or entryway tables, and even in kitchens and bathrooms, can transform the perception of quality. Substantial and decorative hardware, such as brass options, can make simple or builder-grade furniture look more expensive and distract from less costly materials. The final tip involves a small but significant detail: decanting dish and hand soap. Replacing plastic bottles with their labels still attached with refillable soap dispensers in the kitchen and bathroom can instantly upgrade the aesthetic. These dispensers are typically affordable, costing less than $20, and come in various styles, including clear glass or modern stainless steel, to complement any decor. These simple, budget-conscious adjustments demonstrate that a refined and elegant home environment is attainable without a large financial outlay, focusing instead on thoughtful selection and arrangement of decor items. #HomeDecor #AffordableDesign #InteriorDesignTips #LuxuryAesthetics #DecoratingIdeas #BudgetFriendlyDecor #HomeStyling #DesignersSecrets #HomeDecor #AffordableDesign #InteriorDesignTips #LuxuryAesthetics #DecoratingIdeas #BudgetFriendlyDecor #HomeStyling #DesignersSecrets
