5 Rules You Should Always Follow When Decorating Your Bedroom, According to Designers

Decorating a primary bedroom to create an inviting and professional-looking space involves following five key rules, according to interior design experts Andrea DeRosa, Jodi Peterman, and Meghan Kluth. These guidelines focus on the strategic placement of the bed, appropriate lighting, effective use of textiles, integrating storage, and personalized decor. The first rule emphasizes centering the bed and investing in a statement headboard. The bed serves as the focal point of the bedroom, and its placement significantly impacts the room's overall aesthetic and feeling of reprieve. Designers recommend positioning the bed on the wall opposite the bedroom door to ensure it's the first thing seen upon entering, thereby creating an immediate sense of calm and order. Jodi Peterman suggests layering bedding with plush textures and complementary colors, and possibly creating an accent wall behind the headboard, to enhance the bed's prominence. Secondly, the article highlights the importance of functional yet ambient lighting. A balanced lighting scheme combines overhead lighting for tasks with smaller, dimmable fixtures for relaxation. Andrea DeRosa advises having dimmable lamps or sconces near the bed to allow for adjustable lighting based on activity and mood. Peterman adds that sconces, table lamps, or a statement pendant can transform the space, and dimmers are crucial for controlling the mood, avoiding harsh overhead light at the end of the day. The third rule focuses on adding layers and warmth through textiles. Meghan Kluth points out that textiles such as rugs, throw pillows, and window treatments are essential for introducing visual interest and coziness. Placing a rug under the bed is particularly recommended for adding warmth. Layering different window treatments, like drapes, curtains, or Roman shades, further enhances texture and warmth. Kluth also suggests using an abundance of decorative pillows, such as three euro shams with a lumbar pillow for a king-sized bed, to create a more layered and inviting look. Fourthly, the article discusses the integration of decorative storage solutions. A clutter-free bedroom is crucial for a peaceful environment. Peterman recommends investing in dual-purpose furniture, such as nightstands with drawers, upholstered storage benches at the foot of the bed, or bed frames with built-in drawers. Decorative baskets or lidded boxes are also suggested for discreetly storing essentials, contributing to an organized and serene space. Finally, the fifth rule stresses the importance of personalizing the bedroom with purpose. The decor should reflect the resident's personality and preferences. Peterman suggests using meaningful items like framed photos, a small gallery wall, or a piece of art that resonates with the individual. The key is to achieve balance, ensuring that decor is intentional and the bedroom does not become a cluttered storage area for miscellaneous items. Additionally, Kluth advises against buying matching furniture sets, as mixing and matching nightstands and dressers can make a room feel more contemporary and personalized. #BedroomDecor #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #DesignTips #BedroomLighting #TextileDecor #StorageSolutions #PersonalizedDecor #BedroomDecor #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #DesignTips #BedroomLighting #TextileDecor #StorageSolutions #PersonalizedDecor
