5 "Impractical" Choices to Avoid in a Bathroom — These Make Your Spaces More Difficult to Use

Designing a bathroom involves a delicate balance between aesthetics and functionality, especially given its heavy daily use. While the desire for a beautiful space is understandable, certain design choices can lead to practical issues and ongoing nuisances. This article, featuring insights from interior designers, highlights five common impractical bathroom ideas and offers more functional alternatives to ensure a well-designed and enduring space. The first impractical choice discussed is wallpapering an entire bathroom. Due to the moisture-rich environment, traditional wallpaper can degrade quickly. Instead, designers recommend a mixed-finish approach, utilizing durable materials like tile or stone wainscoting for the lower 42 inches of the wall, where moisture contact is most prevalent. Wallpaper can then be applied above this protective layer, preserving its visual impact without compromising durability. Furthermore, certain wallpaper types, such as grasscloth, are particularly susceptible to moisture and stains. A vinyl grasscloth alternative is suggested to achieve a similar aesthetic while providing easier cleaning and greater resilience in damp conditions. The second common pitfall is opting for an all-white aesthetic in the bathroom. While seemingly clean and minimalist, white bathrooms are often difficult to maintain. They show dirt and grime more readily, requiring frequent and rigorous cleaning. Designers advocate for incorporating color, pattern, and texture into the bathroom design. These elements not only add visual interest and chicness but also help to conceal everyday wear and tear, making the space feel more inviting and easier to keep clean over time. Thirdly, the article addresses the impracticality of foot niches in showers, which are often installed to assist with leg shaving. These small recesses can appear awkward and out of place, and their confined nature makes them difficult to clean effectively. A more practical and aesthetically pleasing solution is to incorporate a shower bench or stool. This provides a stable and comfortable surface for shaving while also serving as a decorative element. Shower-proof benches, such as those made from teak, offer durability and blend seamlessly with various bathroom styles. Another impractical decision is improper bathroom lighting. Both too much and too little lighting can create an uncomfortable and non-functional space. The recommended approach is to implement two to three key lighting sources. This includes sconces at the vanity for direct, functional illumination, recessed lighting overhead for general ambient light, and a wet-rated decorative pendant light specifically placed over the tub for mood or accent lighting. This combination ensures adequate illumination for all bathroom activities without overwhelming the space or creating dark spots. Finally, the article cautions against open shelving in bathrooms, particularly when aesthetics are prioritized over practical storage needs. While open shelving can appear stylish, it often leads to cluttered and unorganized spaces, especially for individuals who use numerous products or have less-than-perfect organizational habits. Instead, designers emphasize the importance of ample concealed storage. Vanities with drawers and cabinets, or freestanding storage cabinets, are recommended. These options allow for discreet storage of beauty supplies, towels, and other bathroom essentials, keeping the space tidy and visually uncluttered. By thoughtfully considering storage requirements based on daily routines and product usage, homeowners can design a bathroom that remains organized and functional. #BathroomDesign #InteriorDesign #HomeImprovement #DesignTips #FunctionalDesign #BathroomDecor #StorageSolutions #LightingDesign #MaterialSelection #BathroomDesign #InteriorDesign #HomeImprovement #DesignTips #FunctionalDesign #BathroomDecor #StorageSolutions #LightingDesign #MaterialSelection
