Couple turn 'awful' decking into stylish pergola using bargains from Dunelm, B&M, Aldi and Argos
The article details the transformation of a previously unappealing garden decking area into a stylish pergola with various outdoor amenities by Carly Walley and her partner, Peter. The project was initiated to address an "awful" decking area that had a permanent puddle and appeared unfinished. Initially, the garden space was a soil patch before being decked over, and the patio consisted of mismatched slabs that Carly had temporarily painted over.
The couple managed to execute this significant garden makeover without incurring excessive costs by sourcing materials and decorative items from various budget-friendly retailers, including Dunelm, Home Bargains, Aldi, Amazon, B&M, and B&Q. Carly's objective was to make the outdoor space as inviting and decorated as the interior of their home.
The preparation phase involved Carly purchasing several items from Dunelm, such as two artificial white topiary balls for £12 each and a macramé patterned basket for £12, intended for throws and to be moved indoors during inclement weather. She also acquired inexpensive black woven placemats for £4.25 for a set of four, designed to complement other items from B&M on the outdoor table. An outdoor parasol from B&Q, priced at approximately £150, was considered a good value given its size. The existing outdoor dining table and chairs were from Argos.
Peter's contribution included cutting wood to create flower beds and constructing the pergola's frame, with Carly assisting. The frame was secured against the house for stability, and subsequently, the roof and supporting arches were added. Carly used Cuprinol anti-slip decking stain paint in Silver Birch from B&M, costing £29, for the flower beds and barbecue area, while Peter prepared the decking by sweeping it. Both partners then painted the decking in the same shade and the main pergola frame in white. A projector was installed against the wall for outdoor entertainment. Peter also built wooden planters around the pergola posts and added a waterproof cover to the roof.
For the patio, Carly repainted the existing slabs white using masonry paint and applied a stencil bought from Amazon for £15 to create a pattern with grey paint. Although she acknowledged the result wasn't perfect, she was pleased with the significant improvement it made, especially as Peter had initially wanted to replace the patio entirely due to cost concerns.
Further enhancements included Peter assembling an egg chair, purchased from Studio, which Carly found to be £100 cheaper than a similar one at B&Q, with nicer cushions. The final transformed area features a grey pergola, a projector, a rattan seating area, a small white table, and baskets filled with cushions and throws. Carly also added a Mini Corner Sofa from Argos for £300 and an £18 rug from Aldi. The barbecue area was decorated with small planters, baskets, and wreaths, primarily from Home Bargains, along with a £10 drink dispenser and two £15 lavender planters from B&M.
To further enhance the ambiance, Carly installed a mirror from Home Bargains for £5.99, three sets of white curtains from Amazon for £7.50 each, and string lights from Amazon for £20, which created a visually appealing effect at night. A slightly marked lantern from B&M was purchased at a discount, and a patio heater from Amazon, costing £100, received positive reviews. The couple expressed satisfaction with their completed garden, particularly appreciating the roof on the decking which made the space more functional for evening activities like reading or watching films.
