Designers pair unexpected colors and patterns to create a living room with timeless style
The article describes how designers from Camden Grace Interiors transformed a 1930s Cape Cod-style home in West Hartford, Connecticut, into a living space with timeless style by blending various design aesthetics. The homeowners, a young family, desired a stylish yet informal living area. Lead designer Julia Zajac and founder Jeanne Barber opted for an open floor plan, connecting the living room to the kitchen and layering colors and patterns on a neutral background, as wall coverings were impractical due to the open layout. The approach focused on introducing rich colors and a 'moody feel' through careful furniture selection and textile choices.
A key element in the design was the use of Schumacher’s Floralia fabric for the windows. Barber emphasized the importance of mixing multiple styles, such as Boho, country, and French, to achieve a look that would not quickly become outdated. This philosophy guided the integration of different design elements throughout the room. For instance, floral drapes were used on one wall to complement triple windows, while roman shades made from the same floral fabric were installed on an adjacent window, demonstrating that not all windows require identical treatments to maintain cohesion.
Artistic choices further enhanced the room's character. Barber, who favors figurative art, placed a vintage portrait from Antiques on the Farmington on a console, noting that faces are 'compelling' and add a 'human element' to the space. Lighting fixtures and seating were also chosen to introduce unexpected visual interest. Serena & Lily table lamps with chartreuse linen shades and mustard velvet armchairs adorned with tassel trim provided a distinctive contrast to the existing rusty reds and silvery blues in the room.
The designers incorporated Scalamandré’s Tigré animal print pillows, explaining that the choice reflected the family's cultured tastes and helped guide the eye around the room with repeated color accents. To prevent the scheme from becoming overly 'shabby chic,' a modern-formed sofa was introduced to balance the floral drapery and oversized gingham pattern on a chair. Additional throw pillows featuring global-inspired patterns from Namay Samay and Antoinette Poisson further contributed to this balanced aesthetic. The entire room was unified by a textural wool rug, which also visually expanded the space by creating a cohesive foundation.
