4 Essential Bedroom Decluttering Tips Minimalists Wish Everybody Knew
The bedroom, often a sanctuary, can easily become a repository for clutter due to its private nature, leading to an overwhelming environment and difficulty in locating items. Professional organizers emphasize the importance of creating an organized and welcoming bedroom space. Three experts, Millie Naor, Dana Reder, and Janelle Williams, offer four key strategies to effectively declutter the bedroom.
First, managing the number of decorative pillows is crucial. While plush bedding is desirable, an excessive number of pillows can make the room feel overwhelming. Millie Naor, founder of Bella Organizers, advises limiting decorative pillows to a minimum, suggesting two good sleeping pillows, shams in front of them, and potentially one bolster. This approach maintains a decorated look while allowing for easy storage, such as placing them on a small accent chair at night instead of on the floor.
Second, simplifying the nightstand is essential. Dana Reder, founder of Winnow & Bloom, recommends adhering to “the rule of three” for nightstand surfaces, meaning only three functional items should be displayed. Examples include a book, a lamp, and glasses, or a box of tissues, a pen, and a journal. Drawers should be utilized for other frequently used items like hand lotion, lip balm, or an eye mask, keeping them accessible but out of sight. Janelle Williams, founder of Organized by JWC, stresses that the nightstand should not become a general dumping ground. She suggests a nightly mini-declutter to return items to their designated places, preventing accumulation.
Third, establishing a system for clothing management is vital. Clothing often contributes significantly to bedroom clutter. Williams highlights the importance of regular wardrobe assessment, particularly during seasonal changes. This involves evaluating stored items and discarding or donating anything damaged or no longer used. Keeping a donation bin in the closet facilitates the ongoing removal of unwanted clothing, making the process seamless.
Finally, the practice of immediately putting items away rather than just putting them down is emphasized. Reder points out that avoiding the habit of creating a “chair pile” of clean clothes is critical. Hanging, folding, or placing laundry directly into drawers not only keeps the bedroom tidy but also prevents wrinkles and ensures items are easily locatable. By consistently putting things away right after use, individuals can maintain an organized space, making daily routines like dressing much more efficient and less stressful.
