Drybar Founder Alli Webb Is Changing How We Think About Hair With Her New Brand, Messy
Alli Webb, the founder of Drybar, has launched a new hair brand called Messy, which aims to encourage women to embrace their natural hair texture. This venture comes after Webb sold Drybar in 2020 and experienced a period of personal transformation, including a divorce and her son's rehabilitation, as detailed in her memoir, 'The Messy Truth.' The concept for Messy emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic when Webb, like many others, stopped her usual hair routines of regular blowouts and bleaching. She noticed her hair becoming healthier and began to appreciate its natural state, leading her to question the beauty industry's focus on achieving 'perfect' hair.
Webb's new brand is designed to fill a gap in the market between professional blowouts and completely air-drying hair, offering a 'Messy Method' that promotes healthier hair by reducing heat damage. This method involves allowing hair to air dry partially before twisting sections and letting them dry completely, effectively using fingers as a brush. The brand's philosophy, 'don't f*** it up in the first place,' emphasizes preventative care and celebrates the hair one naturally possesses, rather than striving for an altered ideal. Messy launched with an initial collection of five products, with plans for future expansion, and is available on its website, itsmessy.com, and through Sephora online and in stores.
Among the launch products is the Messy I Am Enough Rough Dry Style Cream, which provides 450-degree heat protection, helps create effortless waves with soft hold and shine, and minimizes frizz. The I Am Transformed Instant Silk Revival Spray, infused with vegan silk, is designed to refresh second-day hair and is anticipated to be a hero product. For overnight care, the I Will Not Be Broken Overnight Repair Hair Serum acts as a silk pillowcase in a bottle, preventing breakage and nourishing hair. The line also includes I Can Begin Again Shampoo, a deeply hydrating, frizz-fighting shampoo with oat peptides, olive stem cell extract, and upcycled argan and watermelon oils, and I Am Soft I Am Strong Conditioner, which softens, smooths, and adds shine.
The brand is inclusive of all hair types, with Webb noting how the products transformed even her creative director's naturally straight hair into wavy textures. Beyond product efficacy, Messy carries an empowering message, reflected in its packaging which features inspiring mantras such as 'I am enough.' Webb views Messy as a reflection of her personal journey and hopes it will give women permission to embrace their authentic selves and the 'messiness' of both their hair and their lives.
