How to Design a Primary Bedroom If Your Goal Is Big Attitude

Heidi Woodman, a designer, aimed to create a primary bedroom with 'attitude' for the 2024 Whole Home project, departing from what she perceived as often "boring" primary bedrooms. Her design approach prioritized unique elements and thoughtful material selection to achieve a distinct character for the space. She began by selecting a natural grasscloth wallcovering from Spoonflower. The chosen wallcovering features a subtle, repeating burlap pattern, designed to add texture and visual interest without overpowering other decorative components in the room. This strategic choice allowed for a rich background that complemented subsequent design decisions. Following the wallcovering, Woodman chose Farrow & Ball's 'Mahogany' for the trim, a deep chocolate brown color. This selection was intended to create a sense of warmth and sophistication, harmonizing with the dual-fabric draperies. These draperies were hand-stitched and incorporated a patchwork detail, a design element that was also echoed in a long lumbar pillow on the bed. The pillow was custom-cased using a vintage quilt that Woodman had previously acquired during a trip to the Hudson Valley, highlighting her ability to integrate unique, found objects into her designs. Motorized woven wood shades from Hunter-Douglas were also installed, contributing to both the aesthetic and functional aspects of the window treatments. For the bed, a black four-poster bed from Serena & Lily was chosen as a central piece. Woodman further enhanced the bedding ensemble with pigment-dyed sheets and blankets from Lissoy, a French bedding company, opting for rich yet neutral tones to maintain a sophisticated palette. A particular emphasis was placed on lampshade design, as Woodman expressed dissatisfaction with standard white lampshades. To address this, custom Euro-style "skirted" lampshades were created in a striped pattern, intentionally designed to complement the ridges of the lamp bases and add a distinctive touch to the lighting fixtures. Above the headboard, an antique painting of Joan of Arc, sourced from Nickey Kehoe, was hung. Woodman appreciated this piece for its depiction of an outdoor scene that was not a typical mountain landscape, offering a unique visual anchor for the bed area. At the foot of the bed, a Four Hands bench with rounded corners was positioned, upholstered in a dark blue mohair and alpaca weave fabric. This piece added a functional and aesthetically pleasing element to the room. A significant design challenge was an unusually proportioned niche within the bedroom that Woodman wanted to integrate seamlessly without resorting to a conventional custom console. She found an ideal solution in a sculptural storage piece by artist Pascal Verbena. This piece, with its inherent artistic quality and multiple niches, served both as a design feature and practical storage, effectively transforming the challenging space into a highlight of the room. The inclusion of smart home technology was also noted, with a Trane Comfort Link® IIXL1050 Thermostat providing remote temperature control and learning capabilities to enhance comfort based on user preferences and local weather conditions. #BedroomDesign #InteriorDecorating #HeidiWoodmanInteriors #WholeHome2024 #TextileDesign #LightingChoices #AntiqueArt #CustomFurniture #SmartHomeTechnology #BedroomDesign #InteriorDecorating #HeidiWoodmanInteriors #WholeHome2024 #TextileDesign #LightingChoices #AntiqueArt #CustomFurniture #SmartHomeTechnology
