This Pound Ridge Kitchen Design Is Functional and Stylish
This blog post highlights a successful kitchen design project in Pound Ridge, a collaboration between Bilotta Kitchens designer Randy O’Kane and a homeowner with a strong vision. The client's active involvement was key to creating a kitchen that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, aligning with the traditional style of the adjacent rooms. The design process began with the selection of a one-inch-thick custom door from Bilotta's private collection, chosen for its traditional aesthetic, and a Farrow & Ball cabinet color, Lamp Room Gray, which seamlessly integrates with the home’s existing color palette.
A central feature of the kitchen is an oversized stone Francois & Co. Toulouse shelf, complemented by a concave stack hood. This distinctive element was sourced by the homeowner from a dealer in London and shipped overseas, underscoring the personalized and unique approach to the design. The smaller details also received significant attention, with mother-of-pearl knobs from Anthropologie selected for specific cabinets to create a luxurious effect. These knobs influenced other design choices, such as the naturally pearlescent clay tile and quartzite countertops, which were chosen for their complementary textures and colors.
Further enhancing the cohesive design, lanterns positioned above the island were chosen to replicate the gold pattern found in the mother-of-pearl knobs, adding visual continuity and sophistication. The homeowner also opted for a diagonal placement of the tile, a choice that O’Kane noted contributed to a more fluid appearance, harmonizing with the dynamic patterns of the knobs and lanterns. Beyond its visual appeal, the kitchen was meticulously designed for high functionality, especially for a baking enthusiast.
Practical elements integrated into the design include a lift-up mechanism for a frequently used mixer, a built-in paper-towel holder, and a cleverly concealed pantry with cabinetry that matches the main kitchen, ensuring that storage and utility are seamlessly blended into the overall aesthetic. The project was a collaborative effort involving O’Kane, the homeowner, Rob Norr of Nordic Construction, and Brad Demotte of DeMotte Architects, demonstrating how a shared vision and teamwork can result in a space that is both spectacular and highly efficient. The article emphasizes the importance of client involvement and attention to detail in achieving a personalized and integrated kitchen design.
