Blooming wonders: 8 best flowering trees to plant in North Texas for seasonal color

The article explores the best flowering trees suitable for planting in North Texas, offering guidance on selection and proper care to enhance a garden's seasonal aesthetics. Spring in North Texas is characterized by a rich display of blooms, attracting visitors to events like the Dallas Arboretum's Dallas Blooms floral festival. This article highlights specific tree varieties that can bring similar vibrant colors to home landscapes, drawing on insights from local horticulture experts. Optimal planting time for trees in North Texas is identified as mid-October through mid-March. Planting beyond mid-March, when temperatures begin to rise, increases the risk of tree loss during the summer months. Nathan Dunham, general manager at Covington’s Nursery, advises on soil preparation, noting that most areas in Dallas feature Blackland Prairie clay soil. This soil type benefits from a mixture of compost and expanded shale, which helps break up the clay and improve water retention for the plants. Proper planting technique is crucial for a tree's initial establishment. Dunham recommends digging a hole twice as wide as the tree's pot and ensuring the planting depth is correct, with roots either level with or slightly above the ground grade to prevent planting too deeply. After placing the tree, a mixture of native soil, compost, and expanded shale should be packed around it, followed by thorough watering. The addition of a root stimulator can further aid in quicker establishment. Emphasizing the importance of selecting native or well-adapted species, the article also suggests incorporating non-flowering native trees, such as live oaks, red oaks, and bur oaks, for additional shade and cooling benefits. Megan Proska, associate vice president of horticulture and collections at the Dallas Arboretum, provides recommendations for eight flowering trees that thrive in North Texas. The Smoke Tree is noted for its oval, purplish foliage and airy pink or purple panicles that create a 'smoke' effect in spring. It is drought-tolerant, prefers well-drained soils, and offers vibrant orange, red, and yellow fall colors. The Purple Plum features dark purple foliage and produces pale pink or white flowers in early spring, performing well in the local climate with oval, finely serrated leaves. Crape Myrtles are highlighted for their heat and drought tolerance and relatively low maintenance. They offer a range of colors and sizes, blooming in summer, and provide good fall color with purple, orange, and red leaves. Texas Mountain Laurel, an evergreen tree that blooms in summer, is suitable for rocky, alkaline soils and is known for its clusters of purple, grape-scented flowers that attract bees and butterflies. Redbuds are small to medium-sized trees that tolerate shade, adapt to clay soils and drought, and display purple-pink flowers in spring, followed by heart-shaped green leaves. Saucer Magnolias are among the earliest spring bloomers, producing large, fragrant white, pink, or purple flowers, with broad, elliptical green leaves appearing later in spring. Dogwoods, though more challenging to grow, are spring bloomers that prefer acidic soil and partial shade, making them ideal for understory plantings. They come in various pink and white flower varieties and offer bright red or orange fall foliage. Lastly, Vitex, or chaste tree, adds summer color, thriving in heat and poor soil, with blossoms available in pink, white, and purple-blue hues. Its palmate, dark green leaves with a grayish underside give it a silvery appearance, and it is beneficial for attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. #NorthTexasGardening #FloweringTrees #DallasArboretum #TreePlantingTips #Horticulture #DroughtTolerantPlants #SeasonalColor #GardenDesign #NorthTexasGardening #FloweringTrees #DallasArboretum #TreePlantingTips #Horticulture #DroughtTolerantPlants #SeasonalColor #GardenDesign
